Summary
A paperboy is shot by a mystery man in a red vehicle on a quiet street in the suburban town of Wentworth, Ohio. While author Johnny Marinville attempts to notify the police, the neighborhood's terrified citizens flee for safety.
An unearthly power, however, stops the call from being answered. Two more colorful vehicles emerge later, each driven by a weird and strange individual, and kill three more inhabitants.
Collie Entragian, a former police officer, organizes the affected individuals and herds them towards the houses of victim David Carver and veterinarian Tom Billingsley.
Audrey Wyler and her autistic nephew Seth, whom she has been caring for since his family died two years ago, are the only occupants who remain indoors the entire time, seemingly unconcerned.
A terrible, otherworldly monster named Tak took possession of Seth's body when it was liberated from a mine during a trip to a mining town in Desperation, Nevada. It later killed Seth's parents and brothers by using tremendous mental coercion.
Tak then pushed Audrey's husband to kill himself. Audrey sought safety in a mental construct of her own design, basing her safe haven after a cherished resort.
Meanwhile, Seth is banished into the depths of his mind while Tak is in command, where he suffers from inadequate cleanliness and nourishment as a result of the creature's negligence.
Despite his autism, Seth possesses a rare mental power, which is most likely why Tak was first drawn to him. It also aids in keeping his mind in check when Tak is in command.
Tak is the creator of the vans, which are based on Seth's favorite cartoon, MotoKops 2200. Tak gradually converts the area into an Old West environment with no means to escape, as some of the residents soon discover.
Seth provides time for Audrey to flee the home while Tak is busy after numerous other people are killed in various ways, including Collie, who was inadvertently shot by a neighboring teenager named Jim Reed, who afterward committed impulsive suicide.
Audrey uses the opportunity to walk across the street to Carver's house and explain the issue to the others after putting a laxative in Seth's milk. Tak leaves Seth's body briefly after ingesting the laxative because it can't tolerate seeing the youngster defecate.
Cammie Reed, armed with a revolver, follows her back to the home with Johnny in an attempt to rescue Seth before Tak returns.
Cammie, distraught by the murder of her son, Jim, kills Seth and gravely wounds Audrey as Tak attempts to re-enter the boy's body. Tak's focus is suddenly drawn to her, and it enters Cammie's body instead.
However, she is unable to stand up to Tak in the same manner that Seth did, and her body is destroyed as a result of the possession. Tak vanishes in the wind after leaving her in the shape of smoke. The vehicles vanish, and the countryside returns to its original form.
A brief epilogue in the form of a letter indicates that Seth's and Audrey's souls have relocated to the meadow near Audrey's mental refuge, where they dwell blissfully in what is suggested to be an alternate parallel heaven.
