The Mysteries of Udolpho is a classic Gothic tale, full of physical and psychological terrors such as lonely decaying castles, supposedly supernatural happenings, a brooding, plotting villain, and a persecuted heroine.

Radcliffe added extended descriptions of exotic landscapes in the Pyrenees and Apennines, as well as Venice, none of which she had visited, to which modern editors point out that only about a third of the novel takes place in the titular Gothic castle, and that the tone and style of the work vary significantly between sections. She depended on travel guides for specifics, which resulted in various inaccuracies.

The story, set in southern France and northern Italy in 1584, follows Emily St. Aubert, a young French woman orphaned by her father's death. Signor Montoni, an Italian brigand who has married her aunt and guardian Madame Cheron, has her imprisoned at Castle Udolpho. Emily's relationship with the dashing Valancourt is thwarted by him and others. Emily also looks into her father's relationship with the Marchioness de Villeroi and how it relates to Castle Udolpho.

Emily St. Aubert is the sole child of a wealthy rural family on the verge of bankruptcy. Emily and her father have a very strong relationship based on their common love of nature. Following her mother's death from sickness, they become further closer. She travels with him from their home Gascony to the Mediterranean coast of Roussillon, passing through several rugged regions. During their travels, they meet Valancourt, a dashing young man who has a mysterious connection with nature. Emily and Valancourt develop feelings for one another.

Emily's father passes away after a lengthy illness. Emily, who is now orphaned, is forced to live with her aunt, Madame Cheron, who has no interest in Emily's hobbies and displays no compassion for her. Her aunt marries Montoni, a shady Italian aristocrat. He wants to marry Emily's friend, Count Morano and attempts to force him on her. Montoni invites Emily and her aunt to his secluded castle of Udolpho after finding Morano is virtually demolished.

Emily is concerned that she has lost Valancourt for good. Morano looks for Emily and attempts to smuggle her away from Udolpho in the dark, but Emily's heart belongs to Valancourt, and she refuses. Montoni discovers Morano's attempted escape and wounds him before chasing him away. Montoni threatens his wife with violence in the months following, attempting to get her to sign up her possessions in Toulouse, which would otherwise pass to Emily upon his wife's death. Madame Cheron dies of a serious illness brought on by her husband's harshness without renouncing her inheritance.

In the castle, many terrifying yet fortuitous incidents occur, but Emily tries to leave with the assistance of a hidden lover, Du Pont, who is also a prisoner there, and the servants Annette and Ludovico. When Emily returns to her aunt's house, she discovers that Valancourt has fled to Paris and squandered his fortune. Despite this, she gains control of the land and is eventually reunited with Valancourt.

Summary

While driving with Rachel Dare, Percy Jackson is accosted by Charles Beckendorf, and the two set out to assault Luke's ship, Princess Andromeda. Because of a spy at Camp Half-Blood, Kronos, who is housed in Luke's mortal body, is not caught off guard, and Beckendorf is murdered in an explosion. Later, Percy awakens in the underwater kingdom of his father Poseidon, which is under attack by the Titan Oceanus. Poseidon sends Percy back to Camp Half-Blood to hear the "Great Prophecy," but Percy wants to help fight. Percy reports the spy to the camp and learns that the Olympians are battling Typhon.

That night, Percy departs with Nico di Angelo, Hades' son, in search of information on how to fight Kronos. Percy obtains a blessing from his mother after visiting Luke's mother in Westport, Connecticut, and speaking with Hestia. He subsequently goes into the underworld, where he bathes in the River Styx and accepts Achilles' curse. Percy succeeds despite being deceived by Nico in return for information about the boy's mother. He exploits his new invulnerability to battle a tiny army of Hades' henchmen.

Percy appears in New York City after emerging from the Underworld, leaving Nico to persuade his father to join the fight against Kronos. Percy enlists the assistance of the campers to protect Olympus, as the gods refuse to give up their fight with Typhon. New York City is put to sleep by a tremendous sleeping spell cast by Morpheus, Hecate, and Kronos himself just before the conflict begins. Despite the addition of Thalia's Hunters of Artemis, the Party Ponies, and a few other allies, the Olympian army is unable to repel the Titan army's relentless attacks. Out of the original 40 campers, about 16 perish at Camp Half-Blood.

When Annabeth shields Percy from an attack by Ethan Nakamura that would have hit Percy in the Achilles tendon, she sustains a serious injury. Despite these defeats, Percy rejects Prometheus' offer of surrender and entrusts Hestia with the Titan's gift of Pandora's pithos. The campers destroy Hyperion, which enrages Kronos even more. Rachel Dare, who has been having unexplained prophesy moments, appears to warn Percy of a drakon that can only be slain by an Ares kid.

Silena Beauregard, dressed as Ares' chief counselor Clarisse, enters and breaks the cabin's war boycott, wounding herself in the process. In a fit of rage, the real Clarisse comes and kills the drakon on her own. The campers discover that Silena was the camp's spy, but that after her boyfriend Beckendorf died, she opted to atone for her wrongdoings.

Percy visits his father and requests that Poseidon join the battle against Typhon, which he grudgingly accepts. Percy and his allies are driven back to the blocks around the Empire State Building, where they make their final stand to preserve Mount Olympus. Kronos succeeds to reach Olympus even as Hades arrives with Nico and an army. Percy confronts Kronos without obtaining a meaningful edge for either side. The warriors may see Typhon nearing New York in an Iris message-vision, only to be vanquished by Poseidon and his Cyclopes.

Ethan Nakamura likewise defies Kronos' predictions, but he is assassinated. When Kronos threatens Annabeth, Luke regains control of his body and, with the help of Percy, injures himself to the brink of death, killing Kronos. Luke informs Percy before he dies that Ethan was correct; the battle was sparked by the wrath of unrecognized gods and unclaimed offspring. He passes away quietly, and his body is carried away by the Fates.

Thalia, Grover, Annabeth, Tyson, Clarisse, and Nico are among the heroes rewarded by the gods for their contributions to the destruction of the Titans. Percy is finally called forward. Zeus bestows to him the greatest of all gifts: immortal godhood. To the Olympians' surprise, Percy instead begs the gods to vow on the River Styx that they will claim all demigods by the age of thirteen, build homes for all minor gods and Hades' offspring, and grant amnesty to innocent Titans and former friends like Calypso. Percy also breaks Zeus', Poseidon's, and Hades' oaths not to produce demigod offspring.

Kronos isn't dead, Hermes tells Percy, but he's been spread so thin that he'll never form a mind, much alone a body again, because the Titans can't die any more than the gods can. Percy finds Rachel's plans to become the next Oracle after the conference, and he hurries to camp with Annabeth and Nico. Rachel is firmly established as the next Oracle under Apollo's guidance, and she delivers the next Great Prophecy. Percy's birthday is celebrated by Annabeth, and the two begin dating shortly after the chapter ends. Camp Half-Blood is slowly returning to normal as the gods keep their new vows. The end-of-summer bead pays tribute to the numerous slain demigods.

Summary

Percy Jackson goes to Goode High School for freshman orientation, where he meets Rachel Elizabeth Dare, a mortal who can see through the Mist. She assists him in defeating two empousai and escaping. Grover is in trouble with the Council of Cloven Elders for not having found Pan, so Percy travels to Camp Half-Blood. Annabeth and Percy accidentally find an entrance into the Labyrinth during a competition organized by the new sword instructor Quintus, which presents a possible invasion route for Luke. Annabeth is tasked with finding Daedalus and persuading him not to give Luke Ariadne's string, which would aid him in navigating the Labyrinth.

Grover, Percy, and Tyson are her chosen companions. Before leaving, Percy learns that Nico plans to resurrect his late sister (with the help of King Minos) by exchanging her soul for the soul of someone who has escaped death – someone like Percy. Before arriving at Geryon's ranch and meeting Nico, the questers face a number of challenges in the maze, including encounters with Briares, the Sphinx, and Janus. They go in search of Hephaestus, and after speaking with him, they split up: Tyson and Grover go in search of Pan, while Annabeth and Percy go to the god's forge in Mount St. Helens' volcano.

Kronos' smiths almost kill Percy in the forge, but he escapes by causing an earthquake that helps him get ejected from the volcano. When Percy awakens, he is on the island of Ogygia with Calypso, the Titan Atlas's daughter. Calypso tells Percy that she is cursed to fall in love with every hero who visits her island, but that the hero will never be able to stay. Percy realizes that he, too, must leave after Hephaestus informs him of events in the mortal world. Percy and Annabeth return to Camp Half-Blood and travel to Manhattan in search of Rachel, who should be able to navigate the Labyrinth.

Despite being kidnapped by Luke's minions, they make it to Daedalus' workshop and discover Quintus is an ancient inventor who lives as an automaton. He informs them that he has already aided Luke, believing they would not be able to withstand a Titan assault. Luke discovers the group and informs them that Minos has been planning to swap Daedalus' soul for his own. The four teenagers fight to get out of the maze, while Daedalus, who has been betrayed, remains in the maze with his hellhound.

Later, they discover the Titan castle of Mount Othrys and learn that Luke has been possessed by Kronos in some way. They run into Grover and Tyson and come to Pan's resting place, where he speaks to them and imparts a piece of his fading spirit to each of them. After that, the party, except Rachel, returns to Camp Half-Blood to battle. The Titan army streams out of the Labyrinth, seemingly winning until Daedalus comes with Mrs. O'Leary and Briares, who murder Kampê.

Grover causes a Panic, scaring away the remaining Titan soldiers. After the battle, Nico assists Daedalus in escaping the Labyrinth and destroys it. Percy departs camp for the school year after a memorial service for the deceased campers. At the conclusion of the summer, Percy receives a visit from his father Poseidon, who presents him with a sand dollar and advises him to "use it carefully." Nico subsequently comes and tells Percy about his plan to finally beat Luke.

Summary

Amir, a rich Pashtun boy, and Hassan, the Hazara son of a servant of Amir's father Ali. Flying kites was a way for the two boys to get away from the horrifying reality they were living in. Hassan is an excellent "kite runner" for Amir, predicting where the kite will fall without having to look at it. Hassan's mother, Sanaubar, abandoned him and Ali, while Amir's mother died in delivery. Both boys are adored by Amir's father, a wealthy businessman whom he lovingly refers to as Baba. He makes it a point to purchase Hassan the exact same items that he buys Amir, much to Amir's chagrin.

Hassan's cleft lip was surgically fixed, and he paid for it. Baba, on the other hand, is harsh with Amir, believing him to be weak and lacking in bravery, and has threatened to physically beat him if he complains about Hassan. Rahim Khan, Baba's best friend, provides Amir with a softer fatherly figure in the form of Rahim Khan, who understands and encourages Amir's passion in writing, which Baba deems to be a female-only pursuit. Amir questions why his father consumes alcohol, which is banned by Islam, while he is sitting on Baba's lap rather than being shooed away as a bother. Baba reminds him that the Mullahs are liars and that the only true sin is thievery, which may take various forms.

Assef, an older child with a sadistic penchant for violence, mocks Amir for mingling with a Hazara, whom he regards as an inferior race whose members only belong in Hazarajat, according to him. Assef is only half-Pashtun, with a German mother and a blond-haired, blue-eyed German look. He plans to assault Amir with brass knuckles one day, but Hassan protects him, threatening to use his slingshot to take out Assef's eye. Assef retreats but vows to avenge himself one day.

Amir wins the local kite-fighting contest one victorious day, finally earning Baba's approval. "For you, a thousand times over," Hassan says to Amir as he races for the final cut kite, a wonderful trophy. Hassan, on the other hand, meets Assef in an alleyway after discovering the kite. Assef physically beats and rapes Hassan for refusing to give over the kite. Amir sees the crime but is afraid to interfere.

He understands that if he fails to bring the kite home, Baba would be disappointed in him. He feels terrible about it, but he knows that speaking about it will ruin his chances of winning Baba's affections, so he stays quiet about it. Following that, Amir maintains a distance from Hassan, as his guilt prevents him from connecting with the youngster. Hassan's mental and physical health starts to decline.

When questioned by Baba, Amir realizes that things would be easier if Hassan were not around, so he hides a watch and some cash beneath Hassan's mattress in the hopes that Baba would force him to leave. Despite the fact that Baba deems "no conduct more horrible than stealing," he forgives him. Hassan and Ali go nevertheless, much to Baba's dismay, because Hassan has informed Ali what happened to him. Amir is no longer plagued by daily reminders of his weakness and treachery, but he continues to live in their shadow.

Five years later, in 1979, the Soviet Union engaged militarily in Afghanistan. Baba and Amir flee to Peshawar, Pakistan, before settling in a run-down apartment in Fremont, California. Baba gets his first job at a petrol station. Amir attends San Jose State University to further his writing talents after graduating from high school. Baba and Amir supplement their income by selling secondhand things at a flea market in San Jose every Sunday.

Amir meets Soraya Taheri, a fellow refugee, and her family there. Even though Baba has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, he may still help Amir by begging Soraya's father for permission to marry her. He agrees, and the two tie the knot. Baba passes away shortly after. Amir and Soraya had a wonderful marriage, but they find much to their dismay, that they are unable to produce children.

Amir establishes himself as a successful author. Amir gets a call from his father's best friend (and boyhood father figure) Rahim Khan fifteen years after his wedding. Khan, who is dying, requests that Amir pay him a visit in Peshawar. "There is a way to be decent again," he says cryptically to Amir.

Hassan and Ali are both deceased, according to Rahim Khan. Ali was murdered after he stepped on a land mine. Hassan and his wife were assassinated because Hassan refused to let the Taliban take Baba and Amir's residence in Kabul. Ali was infertile and not Hassan's biological father, according to Rahim Khan. Hassan was Amir's half-brother, as he was the son of Sanaubar and Baba. Finally, Khan informs Amir that he has summoned him to Pakistan in order to request that he save Hassan's kid, Sohrab, from an orphanage in Kabul.

Amir seeks for Sohrab with the help of Farid, an Afghan cab driver, and Soviet war veteran. They discover that a Taliban official frequently visits the orphanage, bringing cash and typically taking a girl with him. He occasionally picks a guy, most notably Sohrab. Amir learns where to find the official from the orphanage director, and Farid gets an appointment at his house by claiming to have "personal business" with him.

Amir encounters the Taliban commander, Assef, who exposes his true identity. As a dancing boy, Sohrab is kept in Assef's residence. If Amir can defeat Assef in a battle, Assef offers to release him. Assef then severely assaults Amir, shattering multiple bones, until Sohrab fires a brass ball into Assef's left eye with a slingshot. Sohrab assists Amir in leaving the residence, where he passes out and awakens in a hospital.

Sohrab learns about Amir's plans to return to America and maybe adopt him. American officials, on the other hand, want proof of Sohrab's orphan status. Amir informs Sohrab that he may have to return to an orphanage for a short time due to a glitch with the adoption procedure, and Sohrab commits suicide, afraid of going to an institution.

Amir is finally successful in returning him to the United States. After he gets adopted, Sohrab refuses to interact with Amir and Soraya until Amir talks about Sohrab's father Hassan, and kites, as well as demonstrating some of Hassan's talents. Sohrab finally offers Amir a crooked grin, which Amir welcomes wholeheartedly as he runs the kite for Sohrab, adding, "A thousand times over, for you."

Summary

Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd youth, seeks the significance of a reoccurring dream from a Gypsy fortune-teller. The lady sees it as a prophecy, predicting that the boy would find a fortune among the Egyptian pyramids.

After leaving, Santiago encounters an elderly monarch named Melchizedek, also known as the King of Salem, who advises him to sell his sheep and travel to Egypt to fulfill his "Personal Legend." Upon Santiago's arrival in Africa, a guy who promises to be able to take him to the pyramids actually robs him of the money he had earned from his flock. Santiago must next work for a crystal dealer in order to save enough money to travel to the pyramids.

Along the way, the youngster encounters an Englishman in quest of an alchemist, and the two continue their journey together. When they arrive in an oasis, Santiago meets and falls in love with Fatima, an Arabian girl, and proposes to her. She vows to marry him only when he has completed his voyage. He is first frustrated but subsequently learns that genuine love will not cease and that one must not surrender one's destiny to it, since doing so would strip it of its truth.

After that, the young man meets a knowledgeable alchemist who teaches him how to recognize his actual nature. They risk a voyage across warring tribes' areas, where Santiago must prove his oneness with "the soul of the earth" by turning himself into a dust storm before being permitted to continue. When he starts digging near the pyramids, he is robbed again, but he learns from the thief's leader that the riches he was looking for were all along where his first dream took place in a crumbling church.
