Summary

The narrative opens with Jack McGarvey, a 32-year-old Los Angeles police officer. Jack is caught in the middle of a firefight at a petrol station. He kills the gunman but is severely injured and spends months in the hospital recuperating.

When Jack comes home, the McGarveys receive word that he has inherited the Quartermass Ranch in Eagles Roost, Montana, from his late partner's father, Eduardo Fernandez.

Eduardo was having unusual happenings in Montana as Jack was healing from his injuries. He notices blazing lights in the trees and weird noises. He discovers a large black circle one night and assumes it is a doorway established by an extraterrestrial.

Soon later, he finds wild raccoons spying on him and in his home. Eduardo visits the local veterinarian, Travis Potter when all of the raccoons mysteriously die. The veterinarian conducts an autopsy, which yields no definitive information on the cause of death.

Squirrels and birds are now watching him. Despite his fear, Eduardo ultimately dares the visitor to come to him in its actual form rather than using animals. He hears a shambling on his doorstep one night. He opens the door, shotgun in hand, and discovers the traveler piggybacking on his late wife's corpse, taken from the family cemetery on the ranch. Travis Potter discovers Eduardo's body, and an examination reveals that he died of a heart attack.

With his wife, Heather, and kid, Toby, Jack moves onto Eduardo's property. They are looking forward to a calm life in Montana, away from big-city violence, and a secure school for Toby. Falstaff, the family's golden retriever, is smitten with Toby.

Strange things begin to happen to the McGarveys. Travis Potter and attorney Paul Youngblood both suggest that something peculiar happened soon before Eduardo died.

All three McGarveys have repeated nightmares about an entity promising bliss if they let it into their thoughts, but each recognizes the promises are fake and violently rejects the offer. Heather refers to it as the Giver

The Giver uses technological equipment to mesmerize Toby and seeks to speak with Jack through Toby

The family gradually admits to each other the resemblance of their dreams and several perplexing happenings.

The Giver grows impatient and bolder, having never encountered opposition from any species before. It tries to trap the family during a blizzard by cutting off their cars and phone lines.

Jack walks out of the house to urge a neighbor to take his wife and son away, while Heather and Toby stay armed with gasoline cans and pistols.

Despite the fact that they have locked the home, the Giver is able to enter. It manifests itself in two distinct forms, each riding a body from the ranch's family plot.

Heather realizes that gunshots do not harm the Giver riding Eduardo's body, so she sets fire to the home in the hopes that the fire would kill the thing. She fires at the second body, injuring it, and learns the Givers are unable to move without their hosts.

The first Giver has walked its corpse through the flames, and as it continues to follow them, Heather notices that half of it has been devoured by the fire, giving her hope.

Toby captures the Giver in his thoughts by convincing it that he accepts its offer, so immobilizing the Giver and allowing him, his mother, and Falstaff to flee the home.

Harlan Moffit, a snowplow driver, picks up Jack and sees the home on fire as they come into the driveway. Heather and Toby are lugging gas cans up the back stairs when Harlan arrives and informs them of an extraterrestrial invasion.

Toby claims that he can't keep the Giver hostage for much longer and that the Giver is actually at the caretaker's house. When they get to the caretaker's house, they witness a third creature riding another body, trapped immobile by Toby's mind.

The Giver's primary body is located further back in the home and is a huge creature that spawned three lesser extensions of itself. Toby maintains the being's will as the grownups pour gasoline on the structure and set it on fire.

After the authorities had gathered everyone's statements, Toby informs his father that, towards the very end, the Giver produced a few little worms that tried to escape by digging into the wood. He's not sure if any of them survived, and Jack says they'll leave it up to the experts and authorities. A few weeks later, the family returns to Los Angeles.

Summary

Odd Thomas returns to Pico Mundo only to be attacked by surviving members of the demonic organization he encountered in earlier books.

He survives the first attempt on his life by escaping a huge SUV as he rides the rural roads on a hefty motorbike. Odd goes off-road and lures the SUV's driver into driving into a steep gully, killing everybody inside as the SUV explodes.

Odd initially flies to the mall where Stormy and 18 others were murdered, just evading three cultists who, coincidentally or with Odd's psychic attraction, are visiting the mall where the cult's members nearly killed hundreds.

After meeting Mrs. Fischer, Odd rides his bike to a safe home maintained by the same group he aided in the last novel.

The safe house is operated by an older couple who tell him they've been married for years and have only had "5 terrible days in all those years," according to the husband. His wife disagrees, adding, "There were six, you need to figure out where we're disagreeing."

Odd sleeps in the house's guest room and his dreams of Pico Mundo are filled with glimpses of people, both recognizable and unknown, floating by him with angry looks.

He realizes that the cult has gathered enough C4 to destroy a neighboring dam after reconciling with Chief Porter and author Ozzy Boone

Destroying the dam would flood the town partially, but not enough to inflict the damage and death he envisioned. When he goes to the dam, he experiences an epiphany after sighting coyotes.

Odd returns to the safe home to discover it under siege by the cultists, all of whom are killed by the caretakers.

Mrs. Fischer and a "Cleaning Crew" come and make the safe home look as if no one has ever lived there, while Odd and Mrs. Fischer meet in her limo.

He is then forced to engage in a bloody cat-and-mouse game with the fanatics. A paramilitary attack squad pursues him through an almond orchard, and when they can't find him, they start blowing up the orchard's structures.

Using the explosions to his advantage, Odd catches two cultists discussing the ritual rape and slaughter of a little family that owns a property nearby.

Odd kills the cultists and rushes to the home in time to save the family in the barn. Odd hides in the landscape and then enters the home, following the cultists when they make their entrance.

Odd eventually kills all of the cult members, including a girl he describes as having an "innocent child's face."

Odd receives a terrible knife wound from the female cultist before she dies, and then sees her spirit waiting for him. Odd ignores her, causing her to go into a poltergeist rage while Odd flees the house.

Odd observes that the demons ("Bodachs") who had previously collected in preparation of violent occurrences are no longer present. He eventually deduces that the cult intends to spread a lethal strain of the rabies virus via hoax air blasts emerging from a funhouse in a visiting carnival. The Bodachs have not appeared because they are solely concerned with immediate violence and not with sickness.

He is able to foil the scheme, but only at the expense of a fatal gunshot wound. He is reunited with his girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn after death, who educates him on what he will confront in the hereafter.

His literary friend then discovers the manuscript of this book printing inexplicably on his laser printer.

Summary

The community of French Landing, Wisconsin, has been plagued by a series of murders. The killer has been called "The Fisherman" because he made a determined attempt to imitate serial killer Albert Fish's tactics.

The murderer in French Landing, like Fish, preys on youngsters and eats their bodies. As the narrative begins, two victims have already been discovered, with a third on the way.

People all around the region are growing increasingly concerned as a result of the nature of the crimes and the local police's failure to apprehend the perpetrator, and certain segments of the local media are exacerbating the issue with inflammatory and provocative coverage.

Jack Sawyer has suppressed memories of his exploits in The Territories and his search for the Talisman as a twelve-year-old kid following the events of The Talisman; however, the residue of these events have served to subtly alter his life even after he has forgotten them.

Jack rose through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department to become a lieutenant, where his professionalism and remarkable talent have earned him a near-legendary reputation.

When a string of killings in Los Angeles is linked to a farm insurance salesman from French Landing, Wisconsin, Jack joins forces with the French Landing cops to apprehend the assailant.

Jack is magnetically enthralled by the natural splendor of the Coulee Country while in Wisconsin, recalling his childhood experience in The Territories

Certain characteristics of the murder scene threaten to reawaken his suppressed recollections when he subsequently intrudes on a homicide investigation in Santa Monica.

He then resigns from the Los Angeles Police Department and relocates to French Landing to enjoy his early retirement.

When the Fisherman begins terrorizing French Landing, the police practically beg Jack Sawyer for help, and are taken aback when he coldly refuses.

The events of Santa Monica threaten to overwhelm Jack, and he thinks that becoming involved in the inquiry would cause him to lose his mind.

When the Fisherman kidnaps a fourth child, Jack's aloofness is no longer possible. The Fisherman swiftly reveals himself to be much more than a serial killer.

He is, in reality, a Crimson King agent tasked with locating youngsters who have the potential to serve as Breakers. Tyler Marshall, the fourth victim, is one of the most powerful Breakers ever, and he may be all the Crimson King needs to shatter the remaining Dark Tower beams and put an end to all worlds.

Because the Fisherman may also "flip" into The Territories, Jack Sawyer is not just the sole chance for French Landing, but for all of existence.

Summary

A paperboy is shot by a mystery man in a red vehicle on a quiet street in the suburban town of Wentworth, Ohio. While author Johnny Marinville attempts to notify the police, the neighborhood's terrified citizens flee for safety.

An unearthly power, however, stops the call from being answered. Two more colorful vehicles emerge later, each driven by a weird and strange individual, and kill three more inhabitants.

Collie Entragian, a former police officer, organizes the affected individuals and herds them towards the houses of victim David Carver and veterinarian Tom Billingsley

Audrey Wyler and her autistic nephew Seth, whom she has been caring for since his family died two years ago, are the only occupants who remain indoors the entire time, seemingly unconcerned.

A terrible, otherworldly monster named Tak took possession of Seth's body when it was liberated from a mine during a trip to a mining town in Desperation, Nevada. It later killed Seth's parents and brothers by using tremendous mental coercion.

Tak then pushed Audrey's husband to kill himself. Audrey sought safety in a mental construct of her own design, basing her safe haven after a cherished resort.

Meanwhile, Seth is banished into the depths of his mind while Tak is in command, where he suffers from inadequate cleanliness and nourishment as a result of the creature's negligence.

Despite his autism, Seth possesses a rare mental power, which is most likely why Tak was first drawn to him. It also aids in keeping his mind in check when Tak is in command.

Tak is the creator of the vans, which are based on Seth's favorite cartoon, MotoKops 2200. Tak gradually converts the area into an Old West environment with no means to escape, as some of the residents soon discover.

Seth provides time for Audrey to flee the home while Tak is busy after numerous other people are killed in various ways, including Collie, who was inadvertently shot by a neighboring teenager named Jim Reed, who afterward committed impulsive suicide.

Audrey uses the opportunity to walk across the street to Carver's house and explain the issue to the others after putting a laxative in Seth's milk. Tak leaves Seth's body briefly after ingesting the laxative because it can't tolerate seeing the youngster defecate.

Cammie Reed, armed with a revolver, follows her back to the home with Johnny in an attempt to rescue Seth before Tak returns.

Cammie, distraught by the murder of her son, Jim, kills Seth and gravely wounds Audrey as Tak attempts to re-enter the boy's body. Tak's focus is suddenly drawn to her, and it enters Cammie's body instead.

However, she is unable to stand up to Tak in the same manner that Seth did, and her body is destroyed as a result of the possession. Tak vanishes in the wind after leaving her in the shape of smoke. The vehicles vanish, and the countryside returns to its original form.

A brief epilogue in the form of a letter indicates that Seth's and Audrey's souls have relocated to the meadow near Audrey's mental refuge, where they dwell blissfully in what is suggested to be an alternate parallel heaven.

Summary:

Jonathan Harker, a freshly certified English solicitor, pays a visit to Count Dracula at his Carpathian Mountains castle in order to assist the Count in purchasing a home near London. Harker walks the castle, ignoring the Count's warning, and sees three vampire women; Harker is rescued by Dracula, who presents the women with a tiny kid tied within a sack. Harker wakes up in bed; Dracula departs the castle shortly after, abandoning him to the ladies; Harker manages to flee with his life and ends up insane in a Budapest hospital.

Dracula boards a ship bound for England, laden with dirt from his castle. The captain's log recounts the crew's disappearance until he is left alone at the helm to keep the ship on track. When the ship goes aground in Whitby, an animal like a big dog is seen leaping ashore.

Lucy Westenra discusses her marriage offers from Dr. John Seward, Quincey Morris, and Arthur Holmwood in a letter to Harker's fiancée Mina Murray. Lucy accepts Holmwood's offer, but the three of them remain friends. Mina goes to Whitby with her friend Lucy for a vacation. Lucy starts to sleepwalk. Dracula chases Lucy once his ship arrives. Mina receives a letter informing her that her vanished fiancé is unwell, and she travels to Budapest to care for him. Lucy develops a serious illness. Professor Abraham Van Helsing, Seward's former instructor, determines the nature of Lucy's illness but refuses to reveal it.

He diagnoses her with severe anemia. Van Helsing decorates her chamber with garlic blossoms and fashions a necklace out of them. The garlic blossoms are removed by Lucy's mother, who is unaware that they repel vampires. Lucy and her mother are scared by a wolf while Seward and Van Helsing are out, and Mrs. Westenra dies of a heart attack; Lucy dies shortly after.

Following Lucy's burial, newspapers describe a "bloofer woman" (beautiful lady) stalking children in the night, which Van Helsing deduces is Lucy. When the four arrive at her grave, they discover that she is a vampire. They pierce her heart, decapitate her, and stuff garlic into her mouth. Jonathan Harker and Mina, his now-wife, have returned to the fight against Dracula.

As the men begin their quest for Dracula, everyone remains in Dr. Seward's asylum. Only vampires from their country may rest on Earth, according to Van Helsing. Renfield, Seward's patient, is a crazy man who consumes vermin to absorb their life energy, and Dracula speaks with him. Dracula employs Renfield to get access to the asylum after learning of the group's scheme against him. He assaults Mina three times in secrecy, each time drinking her blood and forcing her to drink his blood on the third visit. Unless Dracula is destroyed, she is doomed to become a vampire after her death.

Many earth boxes are discovered while the men search for Dracula's homes. Each of the boxes is opened, and wafers of sacramental bread are sealed within, rendering them worthless to Dracula. They try to capture the Count at his Piccadilly home, but he manages to flee. They discover that Dracula is escaping with his final box to his castle in Transylvania. Mina has a flimsy psychic link to Dracula, which Van Helsing uses to follow Dracula's movements via hypnosis. They are pursuing him, led by Mina.

The hunters in Galatz, Romania, broke apart. Van Helsing and Mina travel to Dracula's castle, where the professor kills the vampire ladies. On the river, Jonathan Harker and Arthur Holmwood are following Dracula's boat, while Quincey Morris and John Seward are following them on land. The hunters converge and attack Dracula's box when it is eventually put onto a wagon by Szgany men.

Harker cuts Dracula's neck and Quincey stabs him in the heart after routing the Szgany. Mina is set free from her vampiric curse as Dracula crumbles to dust. In the struggle against the Szgany, Quincey is gravely wounded. He succumbs to his wounds, content in the knowledge that Mina has been saved. Seven years later, Jonathan Harker writes that the Harkers have a son called Quincey.
