While the world frantically seeks a defense against the incoming Trisolarian fleet, a brilliant but terminal aerospace engineer named Yun Tianming lives a life of profound isolation and despair. Having received a sudden financial windfall from an old classmate, Tianming decides to spend the money on an incredibly unique, romantic gesture: he anonymously purchases the ownership rights to a distant star and gifts it to Cheng Xin, a gentle and compassionate space program scientist whom he has secretly loved since college. Shortly after, Cheng Xin is recruited into the highly classified Staircase Project, led by the cold, calculating intelligence chief Thomas Wade. The project aims to send a human spy to intercept the approaching alien fleet. Because of strict weight limitations, they cannot send a living person; they can only send a frozen human brain. Cheng Xin inadvertently selects a dying Yun Tianming for this mission, unaware that he was her anonymous star donor, launching his detached brain into the cold void of space toward the alien armada.
The narrative flashes forward into the Deterrence Era, roughly half a century after Luo Ji successfully forced a stalemate with Trisolaris. Humanity and the aliens now live in a tense, fragile peace mediated by the "Swordholder"—the single individual holding the ultimate trigger to broadcast the coordinates of both worlds to the universal "Dark Forest." Luo Ji has stood guard as the sole Swordholder for over fifty years, sitting alone in a deep underground bunker, staring at a blank wall with a biometric dead-man's switch strapped to his wrist. However, decades of peace have completely altered human culture. Living in a safe, high-tech utopia, the new generation of humans has grown incredibly soft, peaceful, and feminine, viewing the ancient, hardened Luo Ji as a terrifying, bloodthirsty monster. When the time comes to elect a new Swordholder, humanity overwhelmingly chooses Cheng Xin, believing her deep compassion and gentle nature make her the perfect peaceful guardian for a new era.
The Fall of Deterrence and the Fairy Tales
The Trisolarians, who have used the decades of peace to study human psychology, recognize that Cheng Xin lacks the psychological ruthlessness required to commit planetary suicide. Within mere minutes of Cheng Xin taking over the Swordholder position from Luo Ji, the aliens strike. Six hidden, hyper-advanced Droplets launch a coordinated surprise attack on Earth's broadcast installations. Caught in an agonizing moral dilemma, Cheng Xin hesitates, paralyzed by the fear of destroying two worlds, and refuses to press the button. In less than ten minutes, humanity's deterrence capability is completely destroyed. The Trisolarians immediately invade Earth, forcing the entire human population to migrate to Australia under the brutal, genocidal supervision of an android named Sophon, who plans to starve billions of humans to reduce the population. Humanity's salvation arrives from deep space, where a rogue human warship, the Gravity, escapes the system and uses an old gravitational broadcast system to broadcast the coordinates of Trisolaris to the universe, permanently breaking the stalemate.
Within a few years, a passing alien scout ship spots Trisolaris and fires a relativistic "photoid" projectile into its suns, obliterating the alien homeworld in a massive explosion. Knowing that Earth's location is now compromised by association, the Trisolarians abandon their invasion and flee into deep space. Shortly after, the aliens allow a highly advanced, cybernetic clone of Yun Tianming to contact Cheng Xin via a secure video feed. Because the Sophons are monitoring the conversation, Tianming cannot speak openly. Instead, he tells Cheng Xin three highly complex, magical fairy tales. Cheng Xin and a team of Earth's top scientists spend years breaking down the hidden metaphors in the stories, realizing that Tianming has secretly gifted humanity the mathematical blueprints for survival, including how to build light-speed curvature propulsion drives and how to create a "Black Domain"—a localized zone where the speed of light is permanently lowered, trapping humanity in a safe bubble so the rest of the universe knows they are not a threat.
The Dual-Vector Foil Apocalypse
Humanity splits into fierce political factions over how to handle the impending doom. Thomas Wade, driven by his absolute life motto "Advance! Advance by any means!", attempts to assassinate Cheng Xin to take over her corporate resources and build light-speed ships. Though he fails and is sentenced to prison, Cheng Xin later releases him on probation, allowing him to legally build the engines under her corporate banner on the condition that if his research ever threatens human lives, he must stop. Decades later, Wade successfully builds the first antimatter-powered light-speed drive but triggers a massive standoff with the paranoid UN military. True to her pacifist nature, Cheng Xin steps in and forces Wade to surrender, resulting in his immediate execution and the complete shutdown of the light-speed program. Humanity instead pours all its resources into building massive "Bunker Cities" hidden behind the outer planets like Jupiter and Saturn, believing the outer gas giants will shield them when an alien projectile eventually blows up the sun.
This choice proves to be humanity's ultimate, fatal mistake. Centuries later, a completely indifferent, low-level alien entity known as "Singer" passes by the solar system in a scouting vessel. Singer notices that humanity is hiding behind planets, meaning a standard 3D explosive strike like a photoid will not work. Treating the extermination of a species like a simple piece of administrative paperwork, Singer casually tosses a weapon called a "Dual-Vector Foil" toward Earth. The foil is a terrifying piece of dimensional tech that permanently collapses a region of space from three dimensions down into two dimensions. As the foil activates, the entire solar system begins to unroll and flatten like a massive, drawing canvas. Planets, stars, buildings, and billions of screaming human beings are physically stretched out into a flat, paper-thin, two-dimensional sheet, completely destroying their atomic structures. Humanity's bunker cities offer absolutely zero protection against a dimensional collapse.
The End of the Universe
Amidst the absolute horror of the flattening solar system, Cheng Xin and her friend AA discover that Thomas Wade's secret research facility had managed to secretly complete a single, operational light-speed ship: the Halo. They escape the system just as the Earth is flattened into a giant 2D painting. Utilizing the light-speed drive, they travel to the distant star that Yun Tianming had gifted Cheng Xin centuries ago. Arriving at the planet, named Our Star, Cheng Xin is reunited with Guan Yifan, an astronomer from the ancient deterrence era. However, before she can finally meet Yun Tianming, who is arriving on a separate ship, a sudden spatial anomaly triggers a light-speed breakdown. Cheng Xin and Yifan are accidentally trapped inside a "Black Lines" zone where time moves at an accelerated rate. By the time they manage to break free and land back on the planet, exactly 18.9 million years have passed in the outside world.
Yun Tianming and AA have long since passed away into dust, but they left behind a miraculous gift for the survivors: a doorway into a "Mini-Universe," a pocket dimension outside of normal time and space built using Trisolarian technology. Cheng Xin and Yifan step through the door, living in a peaceful, timeless paradise where they watch the main universe slowly decay over billions of years due to continuous dimensional wars between hyper-advanced alien empires. Eventually, the pocket universe receives a cosmic broadcast from the primordial alien civilizations, begging all inhabitants of mini-universes to return their stolen mass to the main universe so it can naturally collapse and trigger a brand new, ten-dimensional Big Bang. Demonstrating her ultimate, characteristic selflessness, Cheng Xin decides to leave her paradise. She and Yifan step back out into the cold, decaying main universe, leaving behind only a tiny fishbowl with a single fish as a monument to the memory of Earth's past.
