Summary

Jim Ironheart, a recently retired teacher, puts his life in danger to help others. In Portland, he rescues a small kid from an inattentive drunk driver in a van. He saves a toddler from an underground explosion in Boston. He disarms a guy in Houston who was attempting to shoot his own wife – and he isn't just lucky to be in the right location at the right time. He receives "inspiration" and knows he needs to go somewhere quickly.

To the amazement of people around him, he hurries off to call a cab or board a plane, abandoning whatever he's doing at the time. He has no idea where or why these visions occur, but he feels he must be a God-sent guardian angel with a celestial ability.

Holly Thorne, a reporter, was in Portland to write a dull story on a school teacher who had produced a book of poetry full of poems Holly believes to be pure transcendental rubbish - but such is Holly's lot in life.

She is a terrific writer, but she is failing as a reporter because she has too much ethics and compassion. As she walks away, she sees Jim rescue the child from the drunk driver and notices something fishy about Jim's statements of how he began rushing for the child before seeing or hearing the vehicle approaching.

She finds that a mystery good Samaritan called Jim with blue eyes has performed 12 last-minute rescues in different newspapers during the previous three months.

Holly is drawn to Jim and his intense but chilly blue eyes — eyes that burn with a passionate, cold fire, hence the title of the tale.

Holly agrees to accompany this humble yet enigmatic savior on his next "mission." Unbeknownst to Jim, she rushes to the airport and joins a United Airlines DC-10 flight heading for Chicago.

She goes to face him and discovers Jim's weird yet incredible abilities. Jim informs her that he has been sent by God to save a woman and a kid on the plane - he has no idea why God has selected these two in particular, but he does know that they must swap seats or they will perish in the awful plane accident of which he has seen a vision.

Holly is impressed by Jim's notion that he possesses some mystical power bestowed upon him by God.

Holly takes a more skeptical approach, arguing how silly such notions are. She wonders why "God" would choose to save these two people while killing 151 other passengers, as Jim predicted. There must be much more deserving individuals on board, and why would God allow the plane to crash at all? Holly encourages Jim to do more than simply inform the couple to relocate, but to notify the pilot and maybe rescue everyone on board.

Jim first resists, and he is adamant about not questioning his visions. He just informs Holly that God sends him and that he solely follows the instructions - anything else would be going against God's plan.

Who else, he wonders, could be sending him visions to save lives just in time? Holly talks him down and assures him that there is no reason for Jim (or God) to let someone die in vain.

The plane, however, is beyond repair and crashes, reducing the number of deaths from 151 to 47.

Holly is able to earn Jim's trust after the tragedy. They are drawn to each other, but Holly is intrigued by Jim's unusual visions. She intends to find out how, why, and who, just as any reporter would.

However, the more she probes, the stranger things get. Almost all of Jim's childhood memories are gone, save for the fact that his parents died when he was nine at his grandparents' ranch. He just has hazy memories of his youth and becomes irritated when Holly asks him.

She realizes that his odd skills are related to his childhood and the absence of memory from that time. For numerous nights, she hears him mumble in his sleep, "There is an Enemy. It is on its way. It's going to kill us all. It is unrelenting."

She and Jim begin to have identical terrifying nightmares surrounding the old mill from his grandparents' ranch, and during one of these "nightmares," they are both fully conscious and fighting some eerie force coming at them from the walls and ceiling – needless to say, they are convinced the force behind it all is neither God nor benign.

Holly certainly thinks they must return to the ranch to locate the cause of everything, despite her terror of what they may discover. Jim is first hesitant, but as they get closer to the ranch, he becomes increasingly persuaded that the entity is something truly big and strong — something not of this world.

Once inside the scary tower chamber of the windmill, the alien emerges from the neighboring pond, first through noises similar to church bells and then through a captivating show of swirling colors and bursting lights.

The creature then begins to materialize as a voice by magically using a pen and paper to make words appear. It introduces itself as THE FRIEND from ANOTHER WORLD. When asked why, it responds, "TO OBSERVE, STUDY, AND ASSIST MANKIND."

Holly questions why it assaulted them the night before, to which THE FRIEND responds that it was the work of its opposite half, THE ENEMY.

When queried about the bells and lights, it responds, "FOR DRAMA?" When Holly starts asking questions as to why certain individuals are selected but not many others, THE FRIEND reveals that someone will solve all deadly diseases, another will become a fine leader, someone else will become an incredible spiritual leader, and on and on.

While Jim is overjoyed, Holly cannot trust the answers since they do not make logical sense and appear banal, fanciful, and infantile to her.

While Jim is out of the room, Holly asks THE FRIEND probing questions about him. All of the responses are too predictable to accept, and it ultimately responds to her pestering with threats, and then, most surprisingly, with the words "I," "MY," and "ME."

At that point, it is determined that Jim is the source of both THE FRIEND and THE ENEMY, that it is he, not God or some foreign entity, who is generating the nightmares.

After Jim's parents died, he got infatuated with a novel about an extraterrestrial in a pond close to a windmill – so enthralled that the youngster never grew up until one day, an adult-in-body Jim moved away and began a purportedly regular life.

Holly assists Jim in dealing with his past, and the two embark on a new life together.

Summary

Odd Thomas returns to Pico Mundo only to be attacked by surviving members of the demonic organization he encountered in earlier books.

He survives the first attempt on his life by escaping a huge SUV as he rides the rural roads on a hefty motorbike. Odd goes off-road and lures the SUV's driver into driving into a steep gully, killing everybody inside as the SUV explodes.

Odd initially flies to the mall where Stormy and 18 others were murdered, just evading three cultists who, coincidentally or with Odd's psychic attraction, are visiting the mall where the cult's members nearly killed hundreds.

After meeting Mrs. Fischer, Odd rides his bike to a safe home maintained by the same group he aided in the last novel.

The safe house is operated by an older couple who tell him they've been married for years and have only had "5 terrible days in all those years," according to the husband. His wife disagrees, adding, "There were six, you need to figure out where we're disagreeing."

Odd sleeps in the house's guest room and his dreams of Pico Mundo are filled with glimpses of people, both recognizable and unknown, floating by him with angry looks.

He realizes that the cult has gathered enough C4 to destroy a neighboring dam after reconciling with Chief Porter and author Ozzy Boone

Destroying the dam would flood the town partially, but not enough to inflict the damage and death he envisioned. When he goes to the dam, he experiences an epiphany after sighting coyotes.

Odd returns to the safe home to discover it under siege by the cultists, all of whom are killed by the caretakers.

Mrs. Fischer and a "Cleaning Crew" come and make the safe home look as if no one has ever lived there, while Odd and Mrs. Fischer meet in her limo.

He is then forced to engage in a bloody cat-and-mouse game with the fanatics. A paramilitary attack squad pursues him through an almond orchard, and when they can't find him, they start blowing up the orchard's structures.

Using the explosions to his advantage, Odd catches two cultists discussing the ritual rape and slaughter of a little family that owns a property nearby.

Odd kills the cultists and rushes to the home in time to save the family in the barn. Odd hides in the landscape and then enters the home, following the cultists when they make their entrance.

Odd eventually kills all of the cult members, including a girl he describes as having an "innocent child's face."

Odd receives a terrible knife wound from the female cultist before she dies, and then sees her spirit waiting for him. Odd ignores her, causing her to go into a poltergeist rage while Odd flees the house.

Odd observes that the demons ("Bodachs") who had previously collected in preparation of violent occurrences are no longer present. He eventually deduces that the cult intends to spread a lethal strain of the rabies virus via hoax air blasts emerging from a funhouse in a visiting carnival. The Bodachs have not appeared because they are solely concerned with immediate violence and not with sickness.

He is able to foil the scheme, but only at the expense of a fatal gunshot wound. He is reunited with his girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn after death, who educates him on what he will confront in the hereafter.

His literary friend then discovers the manuscript of this book printing inexplicably on his laser printer.

However, there is a serious problem within the enormous property's boundaries. Summary

Seven months after Forever Odd, the story begins. Odd Thomas has been a visitor to St. Bartholomew's Abbey throughout this period, where he expects to find serenity and understanding.

During his stay, he encounters a white-furred dog that helps him on his further travels.

Odd notices a shadow-like Bodach. This spells calamity for the abbey. One of the monks goes missing, and Odd is attacked by an unknown assailant.

Odd hears an odd noise in a heavy snowfall while searching for the missing monk, and subsequently sees a complex, moving pattern of bones against a glass.

The abbey's other visitor, Rodion Romanovich, joins Odd in the garage to pick up the monks.

Odd, skeptical of Romanovich, prepares to leave him at the abbey, but he escapes with one SUV full of monks before Odd can stop him.

A bone creature flips Romanovich's SUV on the way there. Odd's confidant, Brother Knuckles, destroys the beast with the second plow, rescuing everyone.

Back at the school, Odd and Romanovich discover that Jacob's father, The Neverwas, is John Heineman, a monk known as Brother John at the monastery and a former physicist who experimented with reality.

Later, Odd chooses to leave the monastery, but as he drives back to his hometown, psychic magnetism draws him out of the car, and the novel closes as he wanders down the highway toward the unknown.

Elvis Presley, who occasionally aids Odd, ultimately crosses over after three escapades. Odd and the dog (who is now shown to be a spirit) go on together, only to be joined by the ghost of Frank Sinatra seconds later.

Summary

Odd Thomas suspects Danny's birth father, who was just released from jail, has kidnapped him after discovering his close friend Danny has been kidnapped and his stepfather brutally killed.

Odd begins to explore as a result of this notion and is drawn down a water tunnel and into an abandoned hotel by his "psychic magnetism," Odd's ability to hunt out someone or what he is envisioning.

Odd discovers his friend tied up and strapped to a bomb inside. Danny tells Odd that his father did not kidnap him.

Instead, Danny recalls calling a phone sex line and speaking with a woman named Datura because he was lonely as a result of a crippling bone illness. Danny had ultimately handed up the knowledge about Odd's "gift" after being captivated by her. When she realized this, she abducted Danny in order for Odd to disclose himself to her.

Odd walks away from Danny and discovers Datura in her room with two goons, Cheval Robert and Cheval Andre

She directs Odd to show her the ghosts. Odd reluctantly brings her to the hotel's casino, where he has previously seen numerous spirits and one poltergeist.

When Datura offends a ghost, the angered poltergeist hurls things at them. Odd escapes Datura at this moment returns to Danny and deactivates the explosives.

Odd goes to Datura's room and discovers a shotgun, which he used to assassinate Cheval Robert

Datura locates him using "reverse psychic magnetism," but while they are conversing, a mountain lion attacks her from behind.

An enraged Cheval Andre pursues Odd through the hotel before Odd kills him in a sewer.

Odd dies in the sewer, and his soul pays three of his friends a visit. He resurrects, however, in front of the Blue Moon Café, with no memory of how he got there.

He is initially upset by his survival, since his deepest desire is to be reunited with his soul-mate, Bronwen "Stormy" Llewellyn, in the hereafter.

Odd follows Chief Porter to the hotel, where they return to get Danny from that dreadful location.

Odd decides to work at a monastery high in the mountains for two months in order to find tranquility.

Summary

Norman Daniels, Rosie Daniels' husband, abuses her while she is four months pregnant in 1985, leading her to miscarry.

Rosie contemplates leaving Norman, but she dismisses the notion because Norman is a police officer who is very good at locating people.

He also has a violent temper and was recently accused of attacking and raping Wendy Yarrow, a black lady. He has become much more volatile as a result of the ensuing litigation and internal affairs inquiry.

Rosie is making the bed, nine years later. She notices a spot of blood on the sheet from her nose the night before when Norman struck her in the face for spilling an iced drink on him.

Rosie knows she has been silently suffering Norman's abuse for fourteen years, and that if she continues to put up with it, he will ultimately murder her.

Rosie boards a bus with their bank card in her hand. When Norman discovers Rosie has vanished, he vows to track her down and murder her.

Rosie comes in a Midwestern metropolis, befuddled and terrified. She encounters a man named Peter Slowik at the bus terminal, who directs her to a nearby women's shelter.

She rapidly makes friends and, with the assistance of shelter director Anna Stevenson, obtains an apartment and work as a hotel maid.

When Rosie attempts to sell her engagement ring and discovers it's virtually useless, she falls in love with a picture of a woman dressed in a rose madder gown.

She exchanges her ring for the picture, which is unsigned. Bill Steiner, the charming gentleman who runs the pawnshop, approaches her and invites her out on a date.

Rosie is terrified of starting a new relationship, yet she falls in love with Bill despite her fears.

Rosie notices that the artwork appears to shift from time to time. She is eventually able to pass through it. On the other side, she meets Dorcas, a lady who resembles Wendy Yarrow

She also notices the lady in the painting, whom she dubs "Rose Madder" because of her clothes and obvious insanity.

Rose Madder asks Rosie to save her infant from a subterranean labyrinth inhabited by Erinyes, a blind, one-eyed bull who navigates by scent.

Dorcas walks Rosie to the temple grounds' edge. Dorcas is unable to enter the labyrinth since she is suffering from the same mystery ailment as her mistress, and Erinyes can smell her.

Rosie is forced to strip nude and shred her nightgown into many sections before being separated from Dorcas. One has been bathed in Dorcas' blood and is tethered to a rock.

Rosie enters the temple and saves the kid, escapes Erinyes, and returns the newborn to Rose Madder, who vows to compensate her. Rose returns to her normal life, putting the bizarre occurrence out of her mind.

Norman arrives in town, assaults several of Rosie's shelter friends, and then goes to Rosie's apartment.

He assassinates a police officer assigned to protect her, acts like one of them in the patrol car, and encounters Rosie and Bill on their way back from the police station.

He assaults them; almost choking Bill, but Rosie is able to fend him off because she believes she is wearing the golden arm circlet Rose Madder gave her.

After hurting Norman, Rosie drags Bill to the apartment, where she notices the circlet on her table and realizes she has been battling Norman alone the entire time.

Rosie dupes Norman into following her and Bill into the painting, then brings him to Rose Madder, who murders him.

Rosie returns to her reality with Rose Madder's orders to "remember the tree" and a magic elixir that induces memory loss.

She contemplates taking it but ultimately decides to maintain her memories. She rationalizes that, while unpleasant, they are still a part of her and help shape who she is. Her experiences could even make her stronger in the long run, and she doesn't want to give that up.

She then chooses to use the potion on her lover without his knowledge. She hesitates for a minute, concerned that it would poison him by excess because she has no clue how strong it is, but then thinks it's worth the risk because his negative memories will harm their relationship or possibly drive him to leave her.

She drops a drop into his cup and the events of the past fade from his recollection. She then has a sexual encounter with him. The two later marry and have a daughter, and Rosie continues to drug Bill whenever he appears to regain his recollections of the magical world in the picture.

The bottle eventually runs out, but the benefits appear to be permanent at that time, so Rosie no longer worries about it.

For a long after that, everything is OK for Rosie, but when she burns the picture in an attempt to break links with the past, she discovers that the violent rages that characterized both Norman and Rose Madder have begun to flare up within her.

She recalls Rose Madder allowing her to take some seeds home with her, and as penance for the painting, she plants the seeds, along with Norman's police ring, in a secluded forest near her beloved lake.

The seed develops into a gorgeous but lethal tree. She returns to the tree on a regular basis as it develops, allowing her to let go of her fury and go on with her life.

Summary

The community of French Landing, Wisconsin, has been plagued by a series of murders. The killer has been called "The Fisherman" because he made a determined attempt to imitate serial killer Albert Fish's tactics.

The murderer in French Landing, like Fish, preys on youngsters and eats their bodies. As the narrative begins, two victims have already been discovered, with a third on the way.

People all around the region are growing increasingly concerned as a result of the nature of the crimes and the local police's failure to apprehend the perpetrator, and certain segments of the local media are exacerbating the issue with inflammatory and provocative coverage.

Jack Sawyer has suppressed memories of his exploits in The Territories and his search for the Talisman as a twelve-year-old kid following the events of The Talisman; however, the residue of these events have served to subtly alter his life even after he has forgotten them.

Jack rose through the ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department to become a lieutenant, where his professionalism and remarkable talent have earned him a near-legendary reputation.

When a string of killings in Los Angeles is linked to a farm insurance salesman from French Landing, Wisconsin, Jack joins forces with the French Landing cops to apprehend the assailant.

Jack is magnetically enthralled by the natural splendor of the Coulee Country while in Wisconsin, recalling his childhood experience in The Territories

Certain characteristics of the murder scene threaten to reawaken his suppressed recollections when he subsequently intrudes on a homicide investigation in Santa Monica.

He then resigns from the Los Angeles Police Department and relocates to French Landing to enjoy his early retirement.

When the Fisherman begins terrorizing French Landing, the police practically beg Jack Sawyer for help, and are taken aback when he coldly refuses.

The events of Santa Monica threaten to overwhelm Jack, and he thinks that becoming involved in the inquiry would cause him to lose his mind.

When the Fisherman kidnaps a fourth child, Jack's aloofness is no longer possible. The Fisherman swiftly reveals himself to be much more than a serial killer.

He is, in reality, a Crimson King agent tasked with locating youngsters who have the potential to serve as Breakers. Tyler Marshall, the fourth victim, is one of the most powerful Breakers ever, and he may be all the Crimson King needs to shatter the remaining Dark Tower beams and put an end to all worlds.

Because the Fisherman may also "flip" into The Territories, Jack Sawyer is not just the sole chance for French Landing, but for all of existence.

Summary

Jack Sawyer, twelve years old, sets off from Arcadia Beach, New Hampshire, in search of a crystal known as "the Talisman" in order to rescue his mother Lily, who is dying of cancer.

Jack's adventure takes him across the American heartland as well as "the Territories," a bizarre fantasy country located in a reality parallel to Jack's.

Persons in the Territories have "twinners," or counterpart individuals, in our world. Twinners' births, deaths, and (it is implied) other key life events are generally mirrored.

Twinners can also "flip" or migrate to the other world, however, they simply share the body of their parallel universe's equivalent.

When flipped, the Twinner, or the actual person, will instinctively begin speaking and thinking in the language of where they are flipping into.

In rare cases (such as Jack's), a person may die in one world but not the other, rendering the survivor "single-natured," with the capacity to flip back and forth between the two realms, body and mind.

A strange character known as Speedy Parker, who is the twinner of a gunslinger named Parkus in the Territories, teaches Jack how to flip.

In the Territories, the adored Queen Laura DeLoessian, Jack's mother's twin (a movie star renowned as the "Queen of B Movies"), is also dying.

With the assistance and encouragement of Speedy Parker, Jack sets out for the magical Talisman in the Territories.

After meeting a guy named Osmond, who works for Morgan Sloat's twinner, Jack leaves the settlement and follows a soldier along a road.

Morgan almost captures Jack in the woods, but he flees. The trees then assault Jack, nearly strangling him and forcing him to flip back into America.

Jack continues his travels around the United States, eventually landing a job as a bartender in the fictitious town of Oatley, New York. Smokey Updike, the owner, is vicious and nasty to Jack, and he treats him as a slave.

Jack flees Oatley a few days later, pursued by a monster named Elroy, who has been following him during his stay in Oatley.

He eludes Elroy long enough to return to the Territories, where Jack recalls another of his father's associates, Jerry Bledsoe, who was killed in a bizarre explosion.

Morgan Sloat had created the explosion by merely flicking between the two realities, according to Jack. After bumping with Elroy and Morgan again, Jack travels to the American Territories and discovers that he unwittingly caused the deaths of eight construction workers nearby, giving him great sadness and reminding him of Jerry Bledsoe.

In Ohio, Jack encounters Snowball, a blind singer who may or may not be Speedy, who inspires Jack to continue on his adventure.

On the highway, Jack collides with Morgan at a petrol station, flips into the Territories, and almost drowns in a river. Wolf, a big werewolf beast, comes to Jack's aid.

Before Morgan enters through a portal and activates a gadget that allows lightning bolts to hit, the two become friends.

Using the final taste of the juice, Jack returns to his world with Wolf. Jack wonders if he will be able to return to the Territories now that his juice has been depleted.

As they arrive in Indiana, Wolf quickly adjusts to life in the United States. A police officer arrests Jack and Wolf and transports them to the Sunlight Home, a boy’s school for misfits.

The owner, evangelical psychopath Robert Gardner, is Osmond's Twinner in the search for Jack

The guys are bullied by the school's prefects, namely Sonny Singer and Heck Bast. After a few episodes with the prefects and Gardner, in which a student flees the school and the youngsters are interrogated in the middle of the night, Jack and Wolf flee into the Territories, only to discover that the Twinner of the School is a prison camp.

In the restroom, the prefects battle Jack and Wolf, and Gardner, realizing who Jack is, drugs Wolf and kidnaps Jack, torturing him to expose himself.

Wolf transforms into a werewolf after being put into a crate in the fields and wreaks havoc on the school, massacring countless children and bursting into Gardner's office.

Wolf assassinates the prefects in Gardner's office but is shot and killed by Sonny, who then bleeds to death from his wounds. Before going forward, Jack consoles the dying Wolf.

Jack locates Morgan Sloat's son Richard at an Illinois boarding school. Jack tries but fails to persuade Richard of his exploits and Morgan's purpose.

The two escape and flip into the Territories when the school is changed into a monstrous parody of itself as the pupils morph into werewolves and seek to goad Richard into tossing out Jack

There, they encounter a guy named Anders, who is delivering weaponry to Morgan's warriors in preparation for a final fight against Jack

Richard, who is now hallucinating and thinks he has a tumor, is actually suffering from an illness given to him by Morgan

Jack made the decision to grab the package personally and stage an ambush. They must first travel by train across the Blasted Lands, a horrific environment filled with fireballs, deformed beasts, and smugglers.

The army base was bombarded by Jack and a sickly Richard, who destroyed much of Morgan's armada and killed Elroy and Osmond's boy.

Jack travels to California, where Richard finally concedes to the existence of the Territories.

They arrive at Point Venuti and enter the Agincourt Hotel (the Alhambra Inn's twin) unseen by the surviving werewolves.

Speedy Parker, who is frail and dying, meets them on the beachside. Inside the Black Castle, Jack battles stone suits of armor protecting the Talisman and captures it, causing an earthquake that disbands the rest of Morgan Sloat's werewolves.

Jack understands there are more realms than the two he is familiar with, and the Talisman connects them all.

He uses the Talisman to cure Richard, kills Gardner on the castle steps, and battles Morgan on the beach.

He eventually kills Sloat, heals Speedy, and returns to New Hampshire in a limousine. Jack reunites with Lily and employs the Talisman one last time to save his mother and the Queen.

Summary

The narrative takes place in Tarker's Mills, Maine, a fictitious town. Each chapter corresponds to a month on the calendar.

At each full moon, a werewolf ruthlessly murders local inhabitants, and the otherwise normal village lives in dread.

Marty Coslaw, a 10-year-old youngster in a wheelchair, is the story's protagonist. The narrative shifts back and forth between the horrifying episodes and Marty's younger day-to-day existence, as well as how the tragedy impacts him.

An intoxicated railway worker is the werewolf's first victim. A hitchhiker, an abusive spouse, one of Marty's friends at the city park, a herd of pigs at a rural farm, a sheriff's officer while sitting in his cruiser, and lastly the owner of a café are the next characters to appear.

The town's Independence Day fireworks have been canceled for this year. Marty is angry since he has been anticipating for them all year.

Marty's uncle, feeling sorry for his nephew, brings him some fireworks and warns him to light them off very late so his mother doesn't find out.

The werewolf assaults Marty when he is outside having his own private Fourth of July party, and Marty manages to snuff out the monster's left eye with a bundle of firecrackers. The werewolf flees, and the police dismiss Marty's story since they are hunting for a human killer, not a werewolf. Every full moon as the summer progresses, the bloodshed resumes.

Fall has here, and with it comes Halloween. Marty and his father went trick-or-treating to celebrate. While out and about, he notices Reverend Lowe, who is sporting an eye patch.

Lowe, on the other hand, doesn't know Marty since he's wearing a Yoda mask. Marty, who comes from a Catholic family, never attends Lowe's church services, which is why he didn't figure out the werewolf's identity sooner.

Marty writes the pastor anonymous letters throughout the following two weeks, asking him why he doesn't kill himself and end the torment.

In December, he delivers the final letter, which is signed with his name. Reverend Lowe has no idea that Marty has persuaded his rather hesitant uncle to have two silver bullets produced and to come to spend New Year's Eve (which falls on the full moon) with him and his sister.

The werewolf breaks into the house just before midnight to murder Marty. Marty uses the silver bullets to kill the werewolf twice. After the wolf dies, it transforms back into Reverend Lowe, much to the surprise of everyone in the room.

Summary

A paperboy is shot by a mystery man in a red vehicle on a quiet street in the suburban town of Wentworth, Ohio. While author Johnny Marinville attempts to notify the police, the neighborhood's terrified citizens flee for safety.

An unearthly power, however, stops the call from being answered. Two more colorful vehicles emerge later, each driven by a weird and strange individual, and kill three more inhabitants.

Collie Entragian, a former police officer, organizes the affected individuals and herds them towards the houses of victim David Carver and veterinarian Tom Billingsley

Audrey Wyler and her autistic nephew Seth, whom she has been caring for since his family died two years ago, are the only occupants who remain indoors the entire time, seemingly unconcerned.

A terrible, otherworldly monster named Tak took possession of Seth's body when it was liberated from a mine during a trip to a mining town in Desperation, Nevada. It later killed Seth's parents and brothers by using tremendous mental coercion.

Tak then pushed Audrey's husband to kill himself. Audrey sought safety in a mental construct of her own design, basing her safe haven after a cherished resort.

Meanwhile, Seth is banished into the depths of his mind while Tak is in command, where he suffers from inadequate cleanliness and nourishment as a result of the creature's negligence.

Despite his autism, Seth possesses a rare mental power, which is most likely why Tak was first drawn to him. It also aids in keeping his mind in check when Tak is in command.

Tak is the creator of the vans, which are based on Seth's favorite cartoon, MotoKops 2200. Tak gradually converts the area into an Old West environment with no means to escape, as some of the residents soon discover.

Seth provides time for Audrey to flee the home while Tak is busy after numerous other people are killed in various ways, including Collie, who was inadvertently shot by a neighboring teenager named Jim Reed, who afterward committed impulsive suicide.

Audrey uses the opportunity to walk across the street to Carver's house and explain the issue to the others after putting a laxative in Seth's milk. Tak leaves Seth's body briefly after ingesting the laxative because it can't tolerate seeing the youngster defecate.

Cammie Reed, armed with a revolver, follows her back to the home with Johnny in an attempt to rescue Seth before Tak returns.

Cammie, distraught by the murder of her son, Jim, kills Seth and gravely wounds Audrey as Tak attempts to re-enter the boy's body. Tak's focus is suddenly drawn to her, and it enters Cammie's body instead.

However, she is unable to stand up to Tak in the same manner that Seth did, and her body is destroyed as a result of the possession. Tak vanishes in the wind after leaving her in the shape of smoke. The vehicles vanish, and the countryside returns to its original form.

A brief epilogue in the form of a letter indicates that Seth's and Audrey's souls have relocated to the meadow near Audrey's mental refuge, where they dwell blissfully in what is suggested to be an alternate parallel heaven.
