The Good Guy Summary

Timothy Carrier is an unremarkable stonemason who is mistaken for a hitman by a stranger who delivers him an envelope containing $10,000 and a photo of the intended victim, a writer called Linda Paquette while drinking at his regular tavern. Soon after, the real murderer comes, and Tim manages to deceive him by claiming to be the client, stating he's changed his mind and is canceling the hit while paying the killer $10,000 as a "no-kill fee."

Tim follows the murderer outside secretly and is taken aback when the hitman installs a roof-mounted police light on top of his car before driving away, hinting the hitman is an officer. Tim pursues Linda and runs. He calls his old friend Pete, a murder investigator, and begs him to track down the killer's license plate. Tim and Linda barely keep one step ahead of the killer, and they begin to assume that he has practically limitless access to cell phones, bank transactions, and GPS monitoring, hinting that he works for someone extremely powerful. Linda begins to assume Tim is more than just a mason as Tim repeatedly foils the killer.

The incredibly confident/psychotic killer isn't discouraged, but he looks to get more unhinged as the hunt progresses. Tim and Linda develop affections for one another over time. Linda tells Tim about her disturbing background; her parents, former preschool instructors, were wrongfully convicted of horrifying sexual crimes against their kids, including their daughter. Linda was separated from her parents since both of them were sentenced to prison and finally died.

After tiring of following Tim, the murderer goes to Tim's house and kidnaps Tim's mother, then contacts Tim to arrange a deal for Linda. During the conversation, Tim's mother informs him that they are still in her place (the hitman implied they were far away). Tim and Pete race home to save Tim's mother and to assassinate the hitman. FBI officers storm the residence and begin cleaning everything up. However, Tim and Pete spot them approaching, and, suspiciously, Tim phones his friend across the street and asks him to discreetly record the agents.

The main agent discloses that the hitman was actually working for an American politician who is part of a clandestine plan to take over the American government from the inside. An adviser to that politician had lunch with a member of a terrorist group two and a half years prior. The proprietor of the establishment photographed several of his usual clients, capturing the aide and terrorist in the background.  Later, the terrorist was identified as a member of a terrorist organization, while the politician rose to prominence and was being discussed as the future president, and the photographs were published on the restaurant's website. Fearing that their affiliation with a recognized terrorist organization would be revealed, the conspiracy sent the hitman to kill the customers in the photos, one of them was Linda Paquette. Before departing, the lead agent apologizes graciously for creating so much bother but warns Tim that if any of them ever say anything about what occurred, Tim and everyone he loves will be murdered, and the death will be misconstrued as a murder/suicide due to Tim's PTSD. Later, Pete tells Linda about Tim receiving the Medal of Honor for saving several people during his time as a Marine.

Tim shows the tape to the current president of the United States and tells him about the secretive organization of government insiders. The narrative concludes with Tim and Linda married and the plot crumbling; there are several arrests and suicides.

The Husband Summary

Mitch Rafferty, the proprietor of a small landscaping company, receives a phone call from someone claiming to be the abductor of his wife Holly. The caller threatens that Mitch pay $200,000 or Holly will be killed, and if he contacts the authorities, Holly will be tortured and left to die. When Mitch complains that he lacks the funds, the caller assures him that if he loves his wife enough, he will find a way. He is directed to look across the street, where he sees a man walking his dog being shot in the head. The murder is intended to make Mitch believe that the kidnappers are serious and not somebody he should defy. Mitch also becomes aware that he is being watched and thus cannot report Holly's kidnapping to the police.

When the cops arrive to investigate the murder, Mitch is interrogated by a detective named Sandy Taggart. Mitch does not inform Taggart of the kidnapping, and the detective suspects he is withholding information. Mitch, on the other hand, is not arrested and quits when Taggart finally dismisses him.

Mitch returns home to discover his house prepared to appear as if he had murdered his wife. He discovers blood splattered on the kitchen walls and smeared over his clothes in the closet. When the phone rings, the kidnapper confirms Mitch's theories about the setup. He warns Mitch that they have also placed further evidence that will be difficult for Mitch to detect and remove but will be easy for police dogs to identify. The kidnapper then plays a tape of Mitch's session with Taggart, confirming his initial suspicion that the kidnappers are watching him. Mitch is then instructed to keep his mobile phone turned on and to be available for more instructions later that evening.

Mitch, unsure if Taggart can be trusted, lies to the investigator when he comes by; stating Holly had a migraine and was asleep. Taggart informs Mitch that the victim has been identified as Jason Osteen, Mitch's former college roommate with whom he has not talked in several years. Mitch steals a lug wrench from the garage to use as a weapon after Taggart leaves. He discovers some high-tech spying devices in the garage. Just after this revelation, he is confronted with a gun by one of Holly's kidnappers and instructed to drop the wrench. As the shooter tells Mitch to go, the lug wrench the captor had picked up becomes entangled in a stack of Halloween decorations, which then falls on the gunman. During the fall, the gunman collides with a wheelbarrow, crushing his trachea and breaking his neck before accidentally shooting himself in the chest. Mitch removes the revolver and another concealed gun from the man's ankle holster, loads the corpse into his wife's car, and drives to his parents' house.

Mitch arrives at his parents' house, realizing that things are about to become worse. He has no intention of disclosing any information regarding Holly's kidnapping, but he wants to relieve his mind with what may be his final visit and go on good terms with his parents. His connection with his parents is strained because of their severe and unusual parenting methods, which include the "learning room," a sensory deprivation chamber. Mitch chats briefly with his father, learns that his mother is out for the evening, and leaves the visit dejected.

The kidnappers' next phone call arrives at 6:00 p.m. Mitch visits his brother Anson without notifying him of Holly's captivity, as directed. Anson receives a call from the kidnappers during this time and becomes aware of the situation. Anson, who had helped his brothers cope with their parents throughout their upbringing, offers to pay Mitch the two million dollar ransom. Mitch is shocked that Anson can afford to give this. Anson informs Mitch about a friend, ex-FBI agent Julian Campbell, and takes him to Julian's house, indicating that Julian may be able to offer advice learned during his FBI tenure. Anson pulls a pistol on Mitch after arriving at Julian's massive house and declares that he would not offer his money to save Mitch, let alone Holly. Mitch discovers Anson collaborated with the individuals responsible for Holly's kidnapping and shorted them on their last illegal venture. The kidnappers now believe Anson will do everything to assist Mitch to save Holly. Julian tells Mitch that he has never worked for the FBI and has made his fortune in the "entertainment sector." Julian orders his two henchmen to disarm Mitch and transport him outside the city to be executed. Mitch kills his executioners with the neglected revolver in the ankle holster and comes home to discover his parents dead. Again, the situation is set up as though Mitch murdered his parents, but this time Mitch suspects Anson is behind it.

Mitch approaches Anson, tasers him, and binds him to a chair in the laundry room. He does not divulge that he knows Anson murdered his parents and promises to free Anson in exchange for the two million dollars. Anson ultimately gives him the code to a hidden safe in the kitchen, where he discovers 1.4 million dollars in bearer bonds and cash. Mitch, recalling an earlier talk with his brother, questions Anson on how he made so much money. Anson informs him of Julian Campbell's unlawful Internet enterprise, which downloads untraceable adult and child pornography. Anson enjoys telling Mitch this because he wants Mitch to know that Holly's ransom money is filthy and understands Mitch will be reminded of it for the rest of his life with Holly. Mitch is outraged after hearing the account and instead of releasing him as promised, leaves him in the dark laundry room, knowing that Anson dislikes the dark and would be reminded of their parents' learning room.

Meanwhile, Holly is being held hostage in an attic, trying to pull a nail from the floorboards covertly. She sees the nail as a pitiful weapon, and she works on it at first only to have something to focus on. She eventually pries the nail free and conceals it, unsure how she would utilize such a little instrument efficiently against professional murderers.

Holly has also discovered that one of the kidnappers, Jimmy Null, became suspicious of the others and murdered them. He tells Holly how they had all grown suspicious of one other and had taken precautions not to harm him. He intends to retain the entire sum for himself.

During this time, she gains the surviving kidnapper's trust by listening to his vision stories, fabricating her own vision, and suggesting she journey with him to New Mexico, where their visions take place. Jimmy Null then phones Mitch again, this time with a new voice, and accepts the 1.4 million in cash. Mitch is told to meet them at the Turnbridge House, a massive estate whose building has been suspended. Taggart comes before Mitch can depart with the news that Anson's name appears in Jason Osteen's phone book. Taggert also highlights contradictions in Mitch's previous account to him. Mitch first maintains his brother is gone but eventually admits to Taggart the sequence of events. Mitch tasers Taggart and flees as they approach Anson in the laundry area. He tells Taggart before escaping that he cannot trust anybody else to help Holly because he loves her too much and time is running out. The cops pursue Mitch on foot from the gun store after he purchases bullets for a pistol he stole from one of the executioners. He borrows an SUV from a petrol station and drives to the Turnbridge mansion to meet his adversary. The kidnapper informs Mitch that Holly's moment of choosing has arrived, and Holly is able to distract the kidnapper by seeming to have stigmata, which he feels is proof of her visions and dedication. Holly's wounds are really self-inflicted by the nail. Mitch uses the diversion to shoot the kidnapper, who is originally shielded by a bullet-proof vest. Null then follows Mitch and Holly on his motorbike, but Mitch finally kills him by shooting at his head.

An epilogue concludes the novel. Mitch is celebrating his 32nd birthday. We discover that Campbell was murdered in jail and that Anson is presently on death row. Mitch and Holly have two children and are expecting a third, Mitch's business is thriving, and Detective Taggart has become a family friend.

Velocity Summary

Billy Wiles, a bright young short story writer, has not even switched on his computer since his fiancée Barbara went into a coma some years ago. He lives the life of a hermit, spending his leisure time alone at home working on his carpentry, and only leaves his secluded home to work as a bartender. As an orphan, he only associates with a few individuals, whom he regards as associates rather than friends.

When Wiles discovers a piece of paper pinned to his windshield with an ultimatum, his life takes a drastic shift. He chooses against going to the police and instead consults with a guy who happens to be in law enforcement. Despite their reservations, the two men agree that the message must have been a nasty prank.

However, the next day, a horrific murder is recorded that perfectly matches the description supplied in advance by the suspected prankster. Two more messages arrive quickly, and it is only when they get increasingly personal that Wiles realizes he has not been picked at random by the person he refers to as "the freak." For example, immediately after getting the mysterious message "Are you ready for your first wound?" The mask-wearing murderer assaults him forcefully. When Wiles recovers from the shock and discomfort, he discovers that the psychopath has implanted three enormous fish hooks beneath the skin of his brow. Acts of violence, such as the one portrayed above, cause the third-person narrator to ponder on the society in which we live (The following three paragraphs are taken exactly from the book; however, I've changed the phrasing to avoid Copywrite violations.):

"Very lately, typical everyday nastiness remained fundamentally discretionary during humanity's history, excluding the wreaked by conflicts. Grudges, slights to honor, infidelity, and financial disagreements fueled the deadly drive.

"Far more hostility has become impersonal in the contemporary world, far more than in modernity, and especially in the postmodern. Terrorists, street gangs, lone sociopaths, sociopaths in groups, and sociopaths committed to a utopian vision killed individuals they didn't know, against whom they had no actual complaint, for the goal of garnering attention, making a statement, intimidating, or even for the joy of it.

"According to every piece of evidence, the freak, whether related or unrelated to Billy, was a dangerous opponent." He was bold but not impulsive, crazy but self-controlled, bright, smart, and crafty, with a complex and sinister mentality. Billy Wiles, on the other hand, navigated the world as simply and directly as he could. His thoughts were not extravagant. His desires were simple. He simply hoped to live, and he did so with caution." (From 14th Chapter)

Although Wiles investigates each of his few contacts, he is unable to determine which, if any, of them is the freak. He eventually concentrates his attention on one of his coworkers, Steve Zillis. However, it quickly becomes clear that Zillis has a solid alibi for the period when some of the crimes were committed, and Wiles is left in the dark.

Wiles had very specific reasons for not engaging the cops. From the start of his nightmare experience, he has a feeling that circumstantial evidence, which may be placed by the killer, would make him the major suspect: in the eyes of the police, he will be the culprit rather than one of the victims. In addition, when additional killings are executed, he understands he may threaten Barbara's life.

Finally, Wiles discovers that the psychopath regards his actions as a piece of art rather than, say, a game (cf. for example Gentlemen & Players). He realizes that the freak is Valis, the artist, and confronts him. Billy sprays Valis with Mace and shoots him dead after a brief dialogue. When Billy returns home, he incorrectly believes that he and Barbara are secure; but, when he replays the video camera, he sees Zillis enter his house and realizes that Valis and Zillis were working together. He manages to catch up with Zillis before he can kill Barbara, and then kills Zillis after driving him out into the country.

The novel concludes with Billy (now Bill) caring for Barbara in his own house. Barbara's eyes open toward the end of the book, and she remarks on a flock of Barn Swallows flying by. While her eyelids close once more, the finale seemed to point to her quick recovery.

Relentless Summary

Cullen "Cubby" Greenwich has just published his sixth novel, One O'Clock Jump, which has gotten positive reviews from the literary world. Shearman Waxx, a prominent literary critic, gives a critical, albeit slightly false, critique of Cubby's newest book.

Cubby, against the advice of his wife, Penny Greenwich, a children's book author in her own right, strives to learn more about his new adversary. Cubby discovers that he and the reviewer have a favorite restaurant. Cubby is accompanied to the restaurant by his six-year-old prodigy son, Milo. When Shearman Waxx just says "Doom" in the men's room, it foreshadows the impending catastrophe.

When the occupants of the house get home, they continue about their usual lives, until Shearman Waxx is spotted going around the house. He finally departs with Cubby raging at him the entire time. That night, they activate security and alarms, but are woken in the middle of the night by Sherman Waxx in their bed, who repeats the phrase "Doom." The crazy book critic tasers Penny and Cubby many times. When Waxx leaves, the electricity is turned back on, and the alarm system reports that it is completely working and undisturbed.

Cubby is informed of the tragic method in which the writer's family was slain after receiving a chance call from a fellow writer who had previously undergone a similar slandering at the hands of Waxx. Greenwich is encouraged by the author to forsake his house and flee.

A chain of violent events is set in action, beginning with the demolition of the Greenwich home. The entire family, including rescued pooch Lassie, flees to the imagined safety of a friend's real estate investment project. Milo is clearly being targeted after a sudden barrage of rifle rounds into the living area. When their actions are soon countered by the rising aggression of their pursuers—of which there are now more than one—it becomes clear that they need to obtain weapons and intel.

The family finds safety with Penny Greenwich's apocalyptic-fearing family, who are in their well-fortified bunker after being alerted ahead of time. Not happy with being forced to play the part of recluse prey, the family sets out on a mission of exploration to figure out who they're dealing with and what they can do to stop him.

Their quest brings them to the hometowns of two former artists, where they try to process the violence with which they and their families were treated. Along the way, the family deals with the mounting strain and the looming shadow of death with caustic humor, and Milo escapes into his more sophisticated scientific endeavors.

The plot follows the Greenwich's through a series of dramatic and exciting occurrences as they seek clues into their tormentor's background and uncover his secret objectives. They collaborate with Truman, a retired sheriff who is also investigating Waxx. Two Waxx colleagues come on the scene and murder Truman but are slain by Cubby and his wife. They kidnap Waxx while retreating. They take him to his home and meet his mother, Zazu, who exposes herself to be the head of a group that tries to dominate society by eliminating individuals who produce good symbols of hope and happiness via their artwork.

Zazu instructs one of the pursuers, her grandson, to ensure that Waxx is in the car. He stabs Waxx to death, infuriating Zazu. She pulls out her hidden gun and murders her grandson before shooting Cubby. Cubby collapses and dies on the floor. Milo's previous scientific achievements are activated. Time is reversed, and Cubby is spared, but Zazu dies.

The story concludes with the family returning to the bunker, perceiving it as a safe haven from Zazu's group and the world they aim to establish.

Summary

James Tock was born at Colorado's Snow County Hospital at the same time his grandpa, Josef Tock, a pastry chef, died of a stroke.

Though incapacitated by a stroke earlier in the week, Josef unexpectedly recovers to give his son Rudy 10 cryptic prophecies, including that his grandchild would be named James—but that everyone will call him Jimmy. Josef also foresees five dreadful days in his grandson's future. Despite his coherent statement, Josef Tock does not recover from this catastrophe and dies immediately before the baby is delivered.

Earlier in the evening, Rudy Tock met a weird man named Konrad Beezo. Beezo is a clown for the same circus that Tock's pass is for, and he is a fitful, nasty, frightening, chain-smoking guy partially dressed as a clown.

Natalie, a well-known trapeze performer from a decent family, is said to be in labor, and her relatives have nearly shunned her for marrying him. He speaks glowingly about his soon-to-be-born kid, who will be named "Punchinello" and will continue on the family clowning legacy. He uses several colorful epithets to describe his father-in-law.

Tock is overjoyed to be leaving Beezo. However, his mourning over his father's death was brief. Beezo goes wild after learning Natalie died during childbirth, shouting about her family sending assassins to assassinate her and opening fire, killing a doctor and a nurse.

Tock, in arguably the only heroic moment in his modest baker's life, convinces the furious clown that his foes have fled, temporarily quelling his rage.

On the eve of his fifth and final awful day, Jimmy Tock creates the book, a vague autobiography of personal experience, reminisces, and second- or even third-hand recollections of events, transcribing it from a series of recordings.

The story is told in a self-deprecating, humorously restrained tone. Certain experiences, however, stand out sharply, most notably blundering into a terrifying, yet almost strange, bank robbery by a trio of plastique-wielding crazed history buff clowns led by none other than Punchinello Beezo — during which Jimmy gradually realizes he's falling for a comely fellow hostage—and a huge gamble of chicken with a severely disturbed predator on an icy road the night his wife Lorrie (on the second predicted date).

Konrad Beezo is the guy after the Tocks, seeking vengeance for his imprisoned and accidentally-gelded son. Beezo's insatiable yearning for a male Tock kid as his treasure, a new son to nurture in the good clown tradition, frames both this horrible day and the following prophesied day.

The maniac will go to any length to recover what he feels is owed to him, even many facial plastic procedures to assume new identities and evade the authorities.

Jimmy believes that everyone and everything in the universe is tenuously yet inextricably linked to one another, just as his toes were at birth. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "six degrees of separation."

Punchinello, who is presently incarcerated, is urged by Jimmy and Lorrie, who assisted in his conviction and punishment, to donate one of his kidneys to help save Annie Tock, Jimmy, and Lorrie's daughter.

Punchinello only agrees to the gift in exchange for several favors that are little in contrast to the valuable kidney

As the arrangement nears completion, Punchinello requests that Jimmy assassinate Virgilio Vivacemente as a final favor.

Jimmy learns a lot about himself as the prophecies come true one by one, as do Konrad, Natalie, Punchinello, and Konrad's father-in-law, Virgilio Vivacemente, the pompous, cruel patriarch of the world-famous acrobatic dynasty who throws a long shadow over both the Tocks and the Beezos' lives.

Some of Jimmy's findings are lovely; others are terrifying; and still, others rattle his quiet, lumbering pastry chef's existence to its core, forcing him to consider the actual meaning of syndactyly—as both a disease and a life philosophy.

Summary

A shape-shifting extraterrestrial, along with others of his kind, has arrived on Earth to save us from ourselves.

After seeing his whole family slaughtered by wicked aliens focused on stopping him, he embarks on a cross-country quest to save himself.

He stops in the middle of the night at a farmhouse to "borrow" some cash and supplies and finds a sleeping youngster his age. He is able to "become" Curtis Hammond, the boy's exact replica, using a drop of blood from an old bandage.

The terrible aliens arrive seconds after he leaves the house and slaughter the family, leaving just the dog alive. Curtis and the dog escape and wind up at the site of an extraterrestrial sighting.

Castoria and Polluxia Spelkenfelter, twin UFO enthusiasts, know Curtis from news coverage of his murder and resolve to assist him. He eventually confesses his actual nature to them, and they promise to help him finish the assignment he has come to Earth to perform.

The twins, boy, and dog set off together towards Nun's Lake, Idaho, the next place on the twins' schedule while they determine what to do next.

Michelina (Mickey) Bellsong was just released from jail. She has moved in with her Aunt Geneva to start again, but things aren't going as planned. She is adrift and aimless, simply trying to get through the day.

A clever but crippled little girl approaches her as she is sunbathing in the backyard. Leilani Klonk has a malformed hand and a misshapen leg that necessitates the use of a brace. She is smarter and more talkative than the usual nine-year-old, and her wit charms Mickey

Mickey and Geneva get to know the youngster and discover that her mother is a psychotic drug user and her stepfather is a killer. He murdered her older brother Lukipela, and Leilani is the next victim.

Leilani feels that no one can assist her since Preston Maddoc is well-regarded in the academic community. Preston and Leilani's mother, Sinsemilla, travel throughout the country hunting for UFOs, and Leilani knows it's just a matter of time until they return to Montana, where Preston murdered her brother Lukipela

Mickey and Geneva resolve to find a method to assist Leilani, but Preston discovers this and flees with the family in the middle of the night.

Mickey realizes that they have vanished and sets out to find them in order to save Leilani. Leilani had said that they are heading to Nun's Lake, Idaho, the location of a rumored close contact, and Mickey rushes to the town in order to discover the girl.

Mickey comes and proceeds to talk with the man who was "healed" by aliens, only to discover that Leilani's step-father hasn't arrived yet. She searches the home for Preston and follows him to Leilani

Preston is alerted to her existence by the cured man, whom he murders. He slips out of the home and approaches Mickey, knocking her out. He drags her into the deceased man's house and binds her up before speeding back to the campsite.

Curtis meets Leilani at the Nun's Lake campsite and realizes she's in trouble. While Preston is away, he and the twins approach her and persuade her to accompany them.

Leilani is kidnapped by her stepfather and taken to the home where he has concealed Mickey as they rush for the twins' RV.

His objective is to have Leilani witness him kill Mickey before torturing and killing her. When he returns home, he sees that Mickey has escaped her chains. He ditches Leilani, takes her brace and begins looking through the maze of old periodicals and newspapers for Mickey

Leilani enters the maze in search of a route out, where she and Mickey meet. Preston corners them and sets fire to the newspapers in front of them, intending to listen as they burn to death.

Curtis and the twins arrive at the residence, helped by a disillusioned ex-PI sent by Aunt Gen. The PI, Noah Farrell, shoots Preston Maddoc as he speeds through the maze looking for Mickey and Leilani

Preston staggers away, becoming increasingly dizzy from blood loss and smoke inhalation. Noah and Cass locate Mickey and Leilani, and the four of them look for a way out.

Curtis appears in his normal form to save them, and they all flee the home. Preston Maddoc is killed after he gets buried behind a mound of flaming rubbish.

Leilani, Mickey, Aunt Gen, and Noah join Cass and Polly in their attempt to assist Curtis in completing the assignment that has been assigned to him.

Summary

Martie Rhodes assists her friend Susan Jagger, who has agoraphobia, in attending appointments with psychotherapist Dr. Ahriman. Dusty, Martie's spouse, attempts to aid his brother Skeet by giving work in his painting business.

Skeet, who had previously been in drug recovery, relapses, and attempts suicide by jumping from a roof. Dusty falls from the roof while trying to save Skeet and chooses to return his brother to rehab.

Martie has a puzzling case of autophobia and comes home, only to be terrified by her own mirror. Later, her condition increases, and she quickly develops a fear of sharp items, despite the fact that she is truly scared of the harm she may wreak with them.

When Dusty leaves Skeet in the recovery facility, he observes a shadow in his brother's room window. Strange phenomena, such as Skeet, Martie's autophobia, and hypnotism, begin to occur for both Dusty and Martie.

The pair finally realizes that they have both been gradually indoctrinated and trained to obey Dr. Ahriman, a sexual psychopath who poisons and indoctrinates his victims before raping or ordering them to commit murders or suicide for his delight.

After realizing that she had recorded him having sex with her, Dr. Ahriman ordered Susan to commit herself by cutting her wrists. Skeet has also been programmed by the doctor, resulting in his incapacity to fully heal from drug usage and skewed thinking.

Dr. Ahriman creates control by mentioning a name and then reciting a haiku to patients, almost quickly putting them in a detached state of awareness. He tries to explain this by claiming that by directing specific patients to commit heinous crimes like as mass murders, bombings, and random shootings, he may compel laws to make the world a "better place."

Dr. Ahriman is finally slain by another patient who was terrified of Keanu Reeves' portrayal in The Matrix. Dr. Ahriman, the lady suspects, is one of the Machine operatives attempting to manipulate her.

Dusty and Martie acquire a sizable sum from Susan's bequest and gradually attempt to rebuild their damaged lives.

Summary

Joe Carpenter is the protagonist of the tale, having lost his wife and two kids in an aircraft disaster the previous year. Joe has never really recovered from their deaths, and on the one-year anniversary, he encounters a strange lady named Rose, who claims to be a survivor of the accident despite the fact that none were recorded.

Rose says she'll tell Joe the truth, but not yet. Finally admitting that the crash narrative never made sense to him, Joe continues his search for information about what actually happened that night, learning that others may be interested in stopping him even if it meant sacrificing his life.

There have been a great number of suicides among the families of the accident victims, which leads Joe to believe that Rose is somehow convincing them to commit suicide by showing them an image of a cemetery.

This leads him to a development involving his deceased daughter and a laboratory produced girl, CCY 21–21, with healing skills that resemble his daughter and want to live the life she was unable to enjoy.

This girl has the ability to heal and provide hope to everybody she comes into contact with. Her sole flaw is that she cannot cure herself if she is injured.

Rose had been protecting this girl until her healing abilities and full potential evolved until Rose was shot by agents aiming to murder her and the kid.

SSW-89-58, another experiment, has the ability to telepathically perceive and know things by gazing at photos of areas, as well as manipulating the minds of living organisms in that region.

As it turns out, the plane accident was part of a plot to assassinate Rose since she had smuggled CCY 21–21 out of the complex. SSW-89-58 was obliged to take control of the pilot in order to murder everyone on board.

The plane crashed, but the girl and Rose managed to escape and are now on the run. Joe escapes with Nina and goes underground towards the end of the story (CCY 21-21). Rose was shot and perishes in the last storm.

Summary

Tommy Phan is a popular mystery author and first-generation Vietnamese American in southern California. His ultimate aim is to live the American Dream.

The plot begins with Tommy purchasing a new Corvette. He disputes with his mother, declining her invitation to supper. In an act of defiance, he consumes two cheeseburgers, something his mother despises.

There he encounters a gorgeous waitress (whom he will meet later in the story again). During one of these two travels, his radio stops working, and creepy voices can be heard in the static.

When he returns home, he discovers a Rag doll on his front steps, as well as a message written in Vietnamese that he learned as a youngster but has forgotten in his effort to be a genuine American.

When Tommy takes the doll inside his study, it breaks open to reveal a terrible entity bent on murdering him.

Tommy's computer screen is left with a message indicating he has till daybreak, but he has no idea what will happen at dawn.

They go on a race to flee the beast after encountering Del, a lady who appears to talk rather cryptically. She believes him too soon and frequently has conflicting explanations for all of her skills. (At one point, she stole an automobile, claiming she hotwired it one minute and the key was in the ignition the next.)

As their adventure proceeds, the doll appears to expand in size. They go to Tommy's brother, Gi, to try to decipher the note.

They then proceed to Del's place, where we find she is incredibly wealthy yet still works as a waitress. She also reveals a different side of herself when Tommy asks to view her paintings and threatens to shoot him if he does. Tommy is concerned because her dog appears to be extremely intelligent.

Tommy's Corvette is damaged, two automobiles are stolen, and one enormous boat is trashed on their drive to escape the ever-growing doll.

They arrive at Del's mother's house, which appears strange. They claim to be able to listen to live radio broadcasts from the past using their radio. Del's mother has an unusual sense of timing when she predicts when the rain will end.

Gi calls and warns Tommy not to bring the blonde with him to their mother. Tommy drags Del along nevertheless, where he discovers the doll was created by a friend of his mother to terrify him back home. They start a rite that, after a few terrifying minutes, utterly extinguishes the creature.

Tommy notices Del's paintings, which are of him. She had been watching him from afar for the past two years because she knew he was her fate.

He and Del marry in Las Vegas. They then return to their hometown.

Summary

The narrative opens with Jack McGarvey, a 32-year-old Los Angeles police officer. Jack is caught in the middle of a firefight at a petrol station. He kills the gunman but is severely injured and spends months in the hospital recuperating.

When Jack comes home, the McGarveys receive word that he has inherited the Quartermass Ranch in Eagles Roost, Montana, from his late partner's father, Eduardo Fernandez.

Eduardo was having unusual happenings in Montana as Jack was healing from his injuries. He notices blazing lights in the trees and weird noises. He discovers a large black circle one night and assumes it is a doorway established by an extraterrestrial.

Soon later, he finds wild raccoons spying on him and in his home. Eduardo visits the local veterinarian, Travis Potter when all of the raccoons mysteriously die. The veterinarian conducts an autopsy, which yields no definitive information on the cause of death.

Squirrels and birds are now watching him. Despite his fear, Eduardo ultimately dares the visitor to come to him in its actual form rather than using animals. He hears a shambling on his doorstep one night. He opens the door, shotgun in hand, and discovers the traveler piggybacking on his late wife's corpse, taken from the family cemetery on the ranch. Travis Potter discovers Eduardo's body, and an examination reveals that he died of a heart attack.

With his wife, Heather, and kid, Toby, Jack moves onto Eduardo's property. They are looking forward to a calm life in Montana, away from big-city violence, and a secure school for Toby. Falstaff, the family's golden retriever, is smitten with Toby.

Strange things begin to happen to the McGarveys. Travis Potter and attorney Paul Youngblood both suggest that something peculiar happened soon before Eduardo died.

All three McGarveys have repeated nightmares about an entity promising bliss if they let it into their thoughts, but each recognizes the promises are fake and violently rejects the offer. Heather refers to it as the Giver

The Giver uses technological equipment to mesmerize Toby and seeks to speak with Jack through Toby

The family gradually admits to each other the resemblance of their dreams and several perplexing happenings.

The Giver grows impatient and bolder, having never encountered opposition from any species before. It tries to trap the family during a blizzard by cutting off their cars and phone lines.

Jack walks out of the house to urge a neighbor to take his wife and son away, while Heather and Toby stay armed with gasoline cans and pistols.

Despite the fact that they have locked the home, the Giver is able to enter. It manifests itself in two distinct forms, each riding a body from the ranch's family plot.

Heather realizes that gunshots do not harm the Giver riding Eduardo's body, so she sets fire to the home in the hopes that the fire would kill the thing. She fires at the second body, injuring it, and learns the Givers are unable to move without their hosts.

The first Giver has walked its corpse through the flames, and as it continues to follow them, Heather notices that half of it has been devoured by the fire, giving her hope.

Toby captures the Giver in his thoughts by convincing it that he accepts its offer, so immobilizing the Giver and allowing him, his mother, and Falstaff to flee the home.

Harlan Moffit, a snowplow driver, picks up Jack and sees the home on fire as they come into the driveway. Heather and Toby are lugging gas cans up the back stairs when Harlan arrives and informs them of an extraterrestrial invasion.

Toby claims that he can't keep the Giver hostage for much longer and that the Giver is actually at the caretaker's house. When they get to the caretaker's house, they witness a third creature riding another body, trapped immobile by Toby's mind.

The Giver's primary body is located further back in the home and is a huge creature that spawned three lesser extensions of itself. Toby maintains the being's will as the grownups pour gasoline on the structure and set it on fire.

After the authorities had gathered everyone's statements, Toby informs his father that, towards the very end, the Giver produced a few little worms that tried to escape by digging into the wood. He's not sure if any of them survived, and Jack says they'll leave it up to the experts and authorities. A few weeks later, the family returns to Los Angeles.

Summary

Marty Stillwater, a best-selling mystery writer, was recording himself one day when he discovered he kept saying "I need..." over and over again. When he rewound the tape, he discovered that he had been mindlessly repeating "I need" for more than 7 minutes. Marty was nervous the entire day, but as he put the kids to bed, he cooled down and was finally calmed.

Meanwhile, the Killer is out and about before his shift. He enters the pub and walks out with a prostitute to a hotel. He has sex with her and then murders her since she is unable to relieve his rage. He kills his targets and returns to his hotel. That night, still restless, he feels pulled to Topeka for some reason. Suddenly, he begins to say:

"I must... be... I have to be... I have to be..." As the suburbs and, eventually, the dark plains speed by on both sides, his enthusiasm grows gradually. He trembles on the verge of an epiphany that, he believes, will transform his life. "I must be... to be... I feel the urge to be someone." He immediately grasps the significance of what he has spoken. He does not mean what another guy may mean by those three words; he does not imply that he has to be someone famous, wealthy, or significant. Just one person. Someone who has a legitimate name just an ordinary Joe, as they used to say in 1940s movies.

Mr. Murder, pp. 48-49 (the above paragraph is from the book but I changed the way it is in the book to be safe from the Copywrite issues)

The Killer is drawn to the Stillwater mansion like a magnet by an unknown power. On his route, he murders many people, including an elderly couple for a pair of clothes and a gas station employee for food and money.

When he breaks into the Stillwater home, he discovers a photograph of Marty and thinks it's him. He notices Marty's books and decides they are his. He views images of Emily and Charlotte, as well as Marty's wife Paige, and decides he wants to be the father and husband. He tries to write a book but is unable to do it, so he breaks the computer in fury.

Marty was concerned about his fugues (a lapse in recollection) and decided to consult a doctor. The doctor blamed it on stress. When Marty returns home, he discovers that his belongings have been missing and his computer has been shattered.

The Other then enters and accuses him of forgery. Marty shoots him twice in the chest in response, but The Other seems unmoved. The battle catapults them over the banisters, injuring The Other but allowing him to flee.

Marty's family arrives home, and Marty directs them to their next-door neighbor's home. The cops come soon after. The investigator, Cyrus Lowbock, interrogates Marty and doubts his account, implying it is a publicity ploy. Marty and his wife refuse to comply, so the cops go.

The Other's body has recovered quickly from his injuries, but the exertion has left him hungry. He returns after devouring copious amounts of food to reclaim Paige and the girls from Marty, whom he believes has taken them. He "rescues" the daughters from the neighbor's house, but Marty spots him and pursues him. The car smashes, and the girls flee, but the Killer disappears once again.

Drew Oslett and Karl Clocker, two operatives from a shadowy government agency, are dispatched to find the Killer (referred to as "Alfie") they find the bodies of the two seniors as well as Alfie's tracking gadget.

A note from their agency directs them to a People magazine article about Marty Stillwater, where they learn of his link to the Killer

They encounter someone who might be able to assist them find Alfie. To keep their cover, they determine that the Stillwaters must be murdered/suicide, and Alfie must be brought in.

Meanwhile, the Stillwaters retreat to a cabin in Mammoth Lakes to prepare for an attack by The OtherPaige hides beneath a boulder to ambush The Other, but he unexpectedly drives through the cottage.

After that, the Stillwaters retreat to an abandoned church. Marty has been shot, and Paige and the girls are imprisoned.

Drew and Karl seek down The Other as he prepares to murder them. Drew murders The Other, only to be murdered by Karl, who has turned against the agency. He saves the Stillwaters and gives them new identities, a new house, and proof to bring down the agency.

He says that cloning and genetic engineering were utilized to produce a breed of elite killers, with Marty's tissue samples inadvertently being used in the creation of Alfie. Marty submits the proof to the authorities under an unknown name after a few months, and the Stillwaters begin their new lives.
